Poll question: Is it time for political correctness to die?
G-d help me for posting this, but: I just feel it right now. It has to be said.

As a thick-skinned person whose father is African-American and whose mother is Jewish and East Indian, but who doesn't go to pieces when some bigot calls me the N word, something anti-Semitic, or "a macaca", I am begging us as Democrats: PLEASE, it is time to put an end to political correctness. You don't see minorities out there flinching in the face of racism. Believe me, we face it every day; end of day, you just gotta laugh at it. If we spent every hour of every day railing against it, we'd be exhausted, and it still would be there. We Jews and black folks learned that a LONG time ago. So why do non-minorities continue to police and scream at each other? "That's not PC!" "Ooo, that's offensive!" Offensive to whom? To you? You're not a minority! RELAAAAAAAX! :)

Be sensitive to others, but don't get out of control putting the beatdown on each other for not being "100% pure Ivory soap" perfect in everything you do and say. Just be yourself. Speak your truth. I'm a minority sick of PC. Does anyone else feel this way? Here's my poll... and I hope I didn't "offend"!

2. No, I think that we need to continue to be intolerant of intolerance
And while it does get carried overboard at times, the societal approbation that accompanies political correctedness is effective in changing society for the better. Does it get carried too far some times? Sure. But frankly I would rather see this be carried too far rather than the blind hatred of intolerance.

5. War on Intolerance = War on Terror?
Wars against ideologies are destructive, and don't work. I think we've seen that by now. Politeness is a personal choice; enforcing the politeness of others crosses a line into Freeperville.

And that's my truth.

Last time I checked the Fahrenheit 451 squad had not incinerated my local library. More often are not PC "rules" are merely guidelines by which private organizations and local governments moderate materials and dealings with the public?

9. I'M "the other people"... :(
I'm not asking Caucasian, non-Jewish Americans to cease being polite; I'm just asking us all to consider STOPPING trying to enforce politeness on PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT OURSELVES. We can only, ultimately, control what we ourselves say and what we ourselves do. It's not constructive to try to control what others say and do. Nor is it American. My only question here is, if policing others' etiquette is okay, then why is policing others' terror not okay? Both "hurt", according to you. Where is the line? Do you see the slippery slope in this?

Why not just be polite ourselves, allow dumb others to be impolite, mind our own business, and go your way? Example is the best teacher - not THOUGHT POLICING. That's all I'm sayin'.

And I'm just sayin'.
As one of the minorities your unsolicited helpfulness is trying to "protect".
Um, I'm not a baby and I don't need your protection...? :)

should be "polite" and/or "civil." Don't fall into the trap of mistaking social conventions for a political tool.

No one HAS to tell that racist/sexist joke but they have every freedom to do so; but if they choose to, I have every right to call them out for it and a duty to do so.

Edit; before it comes up and it will--I'm married to a man with brown skin and a "funny-sounding" name.

It's not easy being green, you know. And by the way: Oscar the grouch used to be orange. He traded up to green. Why is that? Because it's even less easy being orange? And Grover started off BROWN. (Any Gen X'ers out there besides me remember this?) He got out of having brown fur real quick and came out blue. What was THAT about?

31. That sketch is INSANE... and btw...
Did you know Roosevelt was removed from the show because of political correctness? Sesame Workshop, formed from the ashes of the Children's Television Workshop, opted to take his sketches off Sesame Street because they feared "African-American and underprivileged children and their parents might become offended."

Well as a black kid who loved Roosevelt Franklin, seeing him removed offended me, and that, believe it or not, is why I fight against PC today. That's the gospel truth what started it. That, and seeing funny racist Tex Avery cartoons re-edited the funny out of on Cartoon Network.

God's honest truth.

14. I knew a group of doctors who were so outlandish
with the way they were treating the staff, that they were ordered to take a class on harassment by the hospital. I told this to a friend of mine, and how these guys were such jerks. My friend said jokingly like one of the doctors speaking - "Hey I didn't learn anything new in that harassment class".

The joke being the doctors were only interested in learning how to be better at harassment. I thought it was funny and right on.

18. So true
When I was in the South, I saw certain bigoted individuals get sent to anger management and PC classes for stuff they'd said and done. Ironically, these same people, who with a drink in them would have called me a n---r, opened right up to me and talked somewhat intelligently about their experiences. One guy told me he felt the PC "anti-harassment" classes were somewhat educational for him in how to be even more offensive. Braves pitcher John Rocker, off the record, was intelligent enough to know what "re-education camps" were and referred to his class as one. My only point in creating this poll was to hopefully warn us at DU that *any* form of authoritarianism could be the start of a slippery slope straight down into becoming what we hate. Look at a spectrum. If you go far enough into red, you become infrared, ultraviolet and then blue. If you go too far into blue, you go the opposite and become red.

A Jedi knight in a George Lucas script would get this. But if you read above, you see many people calling themselves DU-ers miss the point entirely.

"LITTLE BLACK GIRL, I WILL PROTECT YOU FROM THOSE WHO DON'T TOLERATE YOU WHETHER YOU WANT MY PROTECTION OR NOT!" How diminished I feel knowing that American rights of freedom of speech are being savaged and abrogated simply because certain people, ironically racist, feel I am so weak I cannot handle intolerance mydamnself.

72. spectra don't do that
If you keep going into the infrared, you get millimeter and radio. On the other end, ultraviolet becomes x-rays, then gamma rays. The EM spectrum doesn't loop back on itself.

This doesn't diminish your point or anything, but you might want a better analogy.

79. Yeah, but PC people are often impolite because someone violated
some sort of unwritten rule or crossed some subjective line. And PC people often run their mouths with all kinds of thoughts crossing the brain.

This usually ends up with militant demands and irroneous accusations against people just trying to have a discussion.

That's the "PC" I think we could do with less of.

23. I think 'PC' just means good manners, applied to those who might previously not have been seen by
the powerful as worthy of good manners.

As with any form of good manners, I think it can go too far, e.g. when it turns into affectation, or when people become preoccupied with form at the expense of substance. But I also don't believe in treating any group as less deserving of respect and politeness than other groups. So I voted for a 'happy medium'.

26. PC ignores that people were polite by choice before it
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 04:31 PM by hsher
It's just another way a nannying society tries to control itself by vicariously controlling us. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Once again, I. Am. A. Minority., and I am asking "concerned non-minorities" who want to use our plight to demonstrate how non-racist they are - as if being completely perfect and non-racist is even humanly possible - to NOT use our plight to do that. Be yourself. If you're polite, be polite. You have my blessings. But DO NOT use my blackness, my gayness, my Jewishness, my femaleness, my handicappedness, my son being Autistic, whatever, as an excuse to legislate how other Americans, however ignorant, speak and behave. That which you believe in, demonstrate yourself, and do not enforce on other Americans.

How are telling people they can't say this or that, and telling people they can't have abortions for instance, ANY. FREAKING. DIFFERENT.???? Again, that is all I'm saying. And if you feel you want to bulldoze over me as a minority and protect me anyway, pretending it's all about "politeness", more power to you. As Americans you have the right to say what you feel. But so do THE IGNORANT. I'm not ignorant, but I am Democrat enough to defend their ignorance and their right to display it. Get it?

People were civil and polite before the days of political correctness. It was a gentlemen's choice not to use foul language around "a lady" and in "polite company". It was a Southern gentleman's choice, believe it or not, to treat his slaves with dignity and not term them N's in public. I lived in the south and know its history. Some made the choice and were perfect gentlemen despite the racism of the times. It was a lady's choice not to swear or fart in public. It still is. My point is, we do not need PC as a floating, indefensible "ghost meme" enforcing how we think, what we say and what we do. That is NO DIFFERENT FROM CONSERVATIVE ANTI-ABORTIONIST THINKING.

"I don't believe in abortion, and I will fight those who do."
"I don't believe in intolerance, and I will fight those who do."

Why not live and let live, so long as it doesn't land in your living room? I'm just sayin'.

-signed, a black person!

30. PC is definitely out of control
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 04:35 PM by Odin2005
The difference between actual respect and PC-based faux "respect" is that PC actually stifles the necessary debate needed to achieve true respect my making certain subjects taboo. A good example is the whole "multiculturalism" thing in Europe, fear of being "un-PC and lacking respect for other cultures" if one criticizes an (usually muslim) immigrant community is preventing honest discussion about assimilation and diversity; and thus is encouraging immigrant enclaves that refude to assimilate and are breeding grounds for millitancy, and are causing a rise in xenophobic political parties like the BNP in the UK.

so forgive me if I screwed up, but I don't think I implied all minority kids can't read. But I've been teaching almost 40 years and have seen soft racism at work. Some teachers don't grade a child accurately because of political correctness and before you know it he's graduating from high school and can't read. That didn't do the child any favors.

Ignorant smears hurt, but if I keep my eyes on the prize, then it's nothing but ignorance talking.

Also, we've been focused on mere words by the media. That does 2 things;
1) Keeps us misdirected off of real solutions with real world effects.
2) Gives the right another weapon to sneer and smear anything pro-worker/liberal.

I've seen them shake their heads in disgust over how tight-ass we get over words. We do pole vault over mole hills sometimes.

N-word is the epitome of PC, and I think you are being hypocrites for avoiding it, so c'mon and go back and edit your posts to show the world how insensitive you can be.

Gimme a "N"...

Sheesh! :eyes:

50. I didn't want to "offend" people
Do you think saying it offends me?
Think again :toast:

Now when this word re-emerges into the public spotlight, can be used in comedy again, and no longer carries its so-called "invective sting", Hsher will be a happy camper.

Good for you showing courage.
Now go say it in Harlem.

52. I thought the whole point(?) of your post was that we don't have to worry about
offending people. PC is about not offending people and you are offended by that so why didn't you use it, but instead use "N-word" several times?

It may have escaped your notice, but the word hasn't gone anywhere, it is still in common use all over the country.

Just because it's "just a word" to YOU doesn't mean that it doesn't bring up deep, visceral hurt in others. You don't get to decide how they feel, ya know?

>>Just because it's "just a word" to YOU doesn't mean that it brings up deep, visceral hurt in others. You don't get to decide how they feel, ya know?

YEAH! As in:

Just because it's "more than a word" to YOU, even though it doesn't apply to you or your race, doesn't mean that it doesn't bring up deep, visceral hurt in others, to whom it actually supposedly applies. You don't get to decide how we feel, *either*... ya know?

Also, PC and you who agree with it have had approximately 20 years of fun enforcing and policing how the rest of the world feels. Isn't it not-so-sensitive-and-offended-people's turn again? Be nice; take turns on the swing. Remember?

61. When did all blacks get together, vote, and determine you the spokesperson...
of what is acceptable or not for each individual?

Just because it doesn't matter to you doesn't mean that it doesn't matter to others. What about the child in second grade who gets called that every day by boys on the bus? What about the grandfather who fought his ass off in Freedom Summer, who walks down the street today and is called that?

Did they defer to you, to make the decision whether or not such words are "PC" (that you even use that term shows you have so much to learn, Grasshopper)?

The day you're black and can tell me what a black child feels like being called nigger on the way to school - which is something I experienced and you did not and never will - we can discuss this. Until then, you sound rather insane.

End of contact.

80. I got yelled at for saying Dems should "have some balls"
Because this is apparently offensive to women. Can't use cunt. Can't use bitch. Can't use pussy. Now, I can't use balls. I'm running out of words here, people!

I LOATHE PCness. It's all bullshit. The use of language is more than just the use of words. There is context to the way we speak. (Or, type on a message board). I understand that people get offended, but to me, that's their problem for not understanding the context and meaning of words. It's not my problem you guys are stupid, you know.

What's the difference if I call someone a "wussy" instead of a "pussy". The meaning is exactly the same. But it's OK to use one word and not the other because of some perceived insult to women? Fuck that. The only reason I WON'T do it is because I respect that there are rules and we gotta follow them, but that's the only reason. I just don't want to get banned. In real life, I'll use "pussy" all I want.

It's stupid to call PCness "being polite". What if I don't want to be polite? What if I'm trying to make a point? I'm not talking about politeness to one another here on the board. I'm talking about when we talk about, say, the Democrats, or the freepers, or a particular public figure. Why should I use polite language if I want to say something negative about Rush Limbaugh? If you're offended because I use a certain word to denigrate Rush Limbaugh, it's because you're not understanding that I'm insulting HIM. It's all about the context. It kind of deflates it if I can't even use a strong word to insult the bastard. Why even bother, in that case?

See, did I just insult people born out of wedlock when I called Rush a bastard? Or do you guys born out of wedlock not give a fuck. I would certainly hope it's the latter. Otherwise we just gotta pack it in around here.

87. Excellent post
There's a flamewar going on, on someone else's post, because some DU-ers were poking fun at the Unafreeper for living at home in his mom's basement. Some delicate soap bubble posted a whine that those guys were making fun of him or her because, lo and behold, he or she still lives in his or her mom's basement. The Unafreeper joke was seen by this person as "a personal attack". To me this is pathology. Codependent, much? Enmeshed? "I am you and you are me"? Context, people, it's all about the context!

Anyway, look at the bottom of this thread. The reactionaries are now comparing me to Bush. "She's the Decider!"

Childish... honestly I want to diaper these dingbats and dump em in a crib.

You hit it on the head. Let's go to PMs and leave these snarling scratch cases to the shelter officials.

ABCD is the most common version of the phrase, but there are variations of it that extend all the way to the letter 'z' in at least two different versions: "American Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, House in Jersey, Kids Learning Medicine, Now Owning Property, Quite Reasonable Salary, Two Uncles Visiting, White Xenophobia Yet Zestful" and "American Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, Housed In Jersey, Keeping Lotsa Motels, Named Omkarnath Patel, Quickly Reached Success Through Underhanded Vicious Ways, Xenophobic Yet Zestful"<6><7><8>

Black Irish often are considered to be of poor ancestry (labourers and such, rather than aristocratic blood.) 60. When I was an orderly at the VA hospital in Milwaukee
I had a hemiplegic man (paralyed below the waist) who I was helping transfer from bed to wheelchair tell me that he "didn't go to Vietnam and get my ass shot off just so a bunch of guilty white liberals could call me an 'African'-American."

I got the point and have refused to use PC since. This was in '88.

63. ***THANK YOU***!!!!
(Whistling, clapping and cheering!)

:yourock:
:applause:

As a black woman and a Jewish woman, I do not need guilty people who are NEITHER telling me what I "should and should not be offended by".

LEAVE THAT DECISION TO ME, AND STFU!

Really: how racist is that, supposing I'm weak, need protection and need to be told what to do, say, feel and think? Thanks, Massas in the above posts who felt the need to "correct" me. I and the rest of America DO SO NEED your superior, moralist hand to defend us against the slings and arrows of racism and ignorance that have been here since the beginning of time and will exist until the end of it.

Continue railing against ideology. It worked for the Rethugs and their "War against terror", and I'm sure it will work for you. DU-ers like Eauclaire, who know better, you've got my kick for the day!

90. Oooh goody I have another name for
my husband, a native born Chinese. Currently he is affectionately referred to as my 'personal coolie' but I see from your list I can now address him as "cunt-eyes" - he'll get a kick out of that!

Not quite a comprehensive list though. I grew up in England and us of the Jewish blood were indeed referred to as 4x2's but also, in cockney rhyming slang, as 'front wheel skids' abbreviated to 'skids'. Why? Because it rhymes with Yids short for Yiddish - the language of my grandparents (on one side anyway). Can't say it ever bothered me, in fact, thinking about it, it definately didn't.

94. Doesn't bother me either
And my mom is Jewish. I figure let the ignorant be ignorant; the too busy are, simply that, too busy to wring their hands and agonize over what words dingbats use for us. If you look below, though, we have a lovely collection of mixed nuts furiously stamping out invectives for me for, golly gee, posting a poll they disagree with without their permission.

They don't see a bit of irony in their resemblance to the RW-ers they hate in goosestepping around trying to control, intimidate and silence other points of view. No, they're too busy thinking themselves clever by comparing people like you and me to the right wing. Check out "take the whole tablet" down there and his or her "cuckoo" gif. It's so pitiful and unimaginative it smells kind of Freeper to me from here. Seems a real Democrat would have created something more visually interesting.

As I said on another post, something smells real *Freeper* about these reactionary PC newcomers... gosh, if their party has driven them to our side, why not start a site of their own instead of bringing that kneejerk Reverse Limbaugh crap here?

92. Get over yourself!
Your responses are simply mean and juvenile-not those of an "enlightened black person who doesn't toe the PC line".

Yada yada yada. Read original post, please. Have a nice day.

77. PC is necessary - to a point.
When we start being offended at the term "nanny state" I draw the line.

The "child care professional state" doesn't cut it.

84. G-D? I think you mean "God"
See? We all know what that word is. Why put a dash in it?

PCness is STUPID.

91. I actually laughed at her hypocrisy. G-d for God...but she's got no shame...
when she types "nigger" 40 times.

Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 06:55 PM by Bluebear
adopting this "mixed" female persona as a way to be able to type "nigger nigger nigger" with supposed impunity because "she" is a minority. I'm not buying it.

As far as the people clicking "die PC die", I don't think they are even actually reading the poll. I hope not.

104. Nor the thread.
Lots of people have no knowledge where the term "politically correct" originated--nor that it's a right-wing emo-tool to prod the ignorant into rebellion against "those hypersensitive liberals."

I think the OP is one of those people.

I don't think there is any sensitivity there. Why post a poll and start a discussion when you are just going to belittle people who don't agree with you?

108. Must suck to live that way.
Wish she'd come to Mississippi and use the word she's so freely tossed around here.

I'd bet, though, that she has little knowledge of the civil rights movement, and even fewer friends or relatives who participated in it.

Especially when they are youths. They act like they are the first ones to experience anything, total lack of respect for history and those who paved the way for them. Nobody is going to ever tell me to freely call people "niggers". Just typing it gives me the creeps.

95. Sigh... dear ignorant: G-d for God is a Jewish thing.
>>Many Jews do not actually ever write God's name on paper or say it, this is to sanctify his name and not to come to desecrate God’s name. In many Jewish communities one would say Hashem instead of God's name. It has been the tradition of many Jews to write G–d or L–rd instead of actually spelling the name out.

Ignorant, much? But then I am sure you won't turn this into an anti-Semitic discussion, right? Seeing as you're OH SO PC.

107. So you ascribe to "PC" when it fits your views?
It's not ignorance when YOUR hypocrisy is pointed out.

So, you're "anti-PC" until it's not about race. Hypocrisy, thy name is Heather.

101. Does anyone remember the guy that was fired
for using the word 'niggardly'? It was on the left coast somewhere and he was shitcanned for having a better vocabulary than his colleagues and superiors. That event, if nothing else, showed what a joke the PC culture is.

The problem I have with the term 'african-american' is what do you calla black person that isn't american? I have a friend, a Jamaican, and she gets really bent out of shape when any refers to her as 'african-american'. She's really proud of being Jamaican and says it demeans her - "why the hell do they assume I'm american just 'cause I'm black" is her lament.

So, a bigot might say 'all black men have big dicks' (which is false), but how is it any less bigoted to call all blacks living in the US 'american'?

By the way, I'm a half shiksa married to a chinese and my daughter is not Amerasian either. If anything she's Eurasian - so stop with the PC labels please - they are as offensive to some as the original epithets.

Either that, or she's trying to set herself aside from...
the majority of black DUers who would rightly be offended by people using the term she loves to use here.
