Minoan Tsunami: Around 3,500 years ago, a series of gigantic explosions are assumed to have led to the elimination of the Minoan civilization based on Crete. In an exclusive revelation of astonishing new discoveries, NOVA follows a team of archaeologists, geologists, and tsunami experts as they rethink how Europe’s first great civilization responded to this violent catastrophe.

Intelligent Design on Trial: On September 26, 2005, a landmark trial was held to determine if the Dover school board violated the First Amendment when it asked high school biology teachers to discuss the creationist doctrine of Intelligent Design and characterize evolution as “just a theory.” Based meticulously on the court transcripts, NOVA recreates the trial and allows viewers to assess the arguments for and against the teaching of Intelligent Design and grasp what was at stake for all of American schools.

Saved by the Sun: Breakthroughs in new materials and ingenious designs for solar collectors are transforming the technology into a vastly cheaper, more efficient alternative. NOVA presents the latest thinking from solar enthusiasts and skeptics as it investigates these cutting-edge research developments.

Perfect Corpse: In the rolling hills of Ireland's County Offaly, laborers dig up two remarkably preserved corpses. Archaeologists recognize the corpses as Europe's rare bog bodies: prehistoric corpses flung into marshes with forensic clues often suggesting execution or human sacrifice. Like a first-rate crime thriller, NOVA follows their methodical hunt for clues to find out the victims' identities and the circumstances of their violent deaths.

Raptor Force: Dramatic original footage from cameras mounted on the backs of falcons, owls, eagles and hawks reveals why they are masters of the sky and how aeronautics engineers use their unique abilities and body designs as the basis of new aircraft technology.

Dogs that Changed the World: Using DNA analysis and other research, scientists have now pieced together the puzzle of canine evolution, creating a fascinating picture of some of the essential dogs vital to the canine population.

Sharkland: Off the coast of Southern Africa, a unique pattern of warm and cold currents brings together nearly 150 species of sharks.



Episodes of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE that will air this winter.

The Berlin Airlift: On June 18, 1948, the Soviet Union attempted to control all of Berlin by cutting off food supplies and surface traffic to and from the city of West Berlin. As a response, the United States initiated a massive airlift of supplies to the beleaguered Germans. The program chronicles the year-long airlift and examines the hostile relationship between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

New Orleans: Similar to its past productions on New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas, “New Orleans” will offer a portrait that examines the city’s unique and distinctive culture and illuminates its central place on the American landscape.
Hijacked: This episode recounts the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine’s hijacking of five commercial airliners containing 600 passengers in 1970.

Jonestown: An in-depth examination of Jim Jones and his followers, and their mass suicide in an isolated rain forest in Guyana.

Alexander Hamilton: The story of the underappreciated genius who laid the groundwork for the nation's modern economy - including the banking system, Wall Street, and an "opportunity society" in which talent and hard work, not birth, determined success.



Episodes of MASTERPIECE THEATRE that will air this winter.

Jane Eyre: An adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s much-adored classic.

Sally Lockhart: Ruby in the Smoke: Scrappy teen Sally Lockhart (Billie Piper) has a mind for numbers and for sleuthing. In this first book of Phillip Pullman’s quartet of novels, she is put through the paces of Victorian melodrama and mystery.

Dracula: A visceral, sexy, and bold retelling of Bram Stoker's vampire classic, Dracula blows the cobwebs off traditional period drama.

News War: This special includes four films which examine the recent history of journalism, from the Nixon administration’s assault on the media to the post-Watergate popularity of the press, to global forces now changing -- and challenging -- the role of a free press in society.

The Mormons: This co-production of FRONTLINE and AMERICAN EXPERIENCE looks at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from its founding by Joseph Smith in 1830 to today. One of the world's fastest-growing religions, the Church of Latter-Day Saints has five million American members whose beliefs are helping to dramatically reshape American politics and society.



Some of high-profile specials that will be airing on PBS in the months ahead.

America's Ballroom Challenge: The first program to feature all four major styles of competitive ballroom dancing: American Rhythm, American Smooth, International Latin and International Standard. Twenty-four couples — six in each of the four dance categories — competed first in group dances with an international panel of judges ranking their performances.

America at a Crossroads: A series of documentaries that explores the challenges confronting the world post-9/11, including the war on terrorism; the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; the experience of American troops; the struggle for balance within the Muslim world; and perspectives on America’s role globally.

Ken Burns: The War: A seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of nearly 50 men and women from four quintessentially American towns.

crap. We want more "reality" shows and cultural entertainment like "Dancing with the Stars."

I can't even bring myself to watch some of the good stuff on network TV... the ads are too much. (Yes, I know about Tivo... my son tells me about it at every opportunity.
