I'm going out to get a beer.
Sucks to be us right now. It's true, the vote didn't go the way we wanted it to. But I think we have a lot to be proud of. I think it is fair to say that without the liberal blogosphere, there wouldn't have even been a fight. So that's something that you all did. You should be proud. At least now they know that we aren't going to sit back and do nothing while our country goes down the toilet.

I know that we're all pretty upset right now, and we're all dealing with this in different ways. Some of us want to find support amongst our DU friends. Some of you want to vent. We have asked the mods to back off a bit, to give you all room to blow off steam a little. But we don't have unlimited tolerance, so please.. Just don't act like a dick.

And if you're in a really bad mood, and if you feel like disrupting or pissing people off -- please turn off your computer right now. We don't want you to do something that you might regret in the morning. There is no shame in logging off of DU.

Hell, that's what I'm going to do right now. As I said, I'm going to get a beer, and EarlG is gonna come with me. And we're going to raise a glass to the kick-ass Democrats on DU, who still give a fuck about this country, and are still willing to fight for the things that matter.

You rock.

181. I'd second that! Besides, you work a helluva lot harder than the
current "occupant."

BTW - Skinner - did you see this thread?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x273430

Suggestion in there about a forum or some such to keep track of any challengers to those "Doormat Dems" who torpedoed an alito filibuster. Might be MOST worthwhile as a public service!

Just a thought...

Thanks for all you do, already!

86. I think this person has a great idea:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/30/18335/6366

Call Kerry and Kennedy and thank them for trying. Thank them for trying to lead these spineless dems.

And while you're at it--DONATE to the brave ones who supported the filibuster and send monopoly money to the others.

It was a battle worth fighting, if for no other reason than to separate out the unacceptable as leadership for the party.

Those who voted for cloture are dead to me as party leaders. I'll accept them in the party, but not in any leadership role.

And can we get that weak-kneed quisling Rockefeller off the Intel committee now? He's useless.

C-Span streaming, DU up and running... a remarkable ride. On to the next fight with new links and resources. And a small donation is on it's way.

A toast of thanks Skinner! (Ok, it's the cheap stuff... I'm saving the good bottle for VICTORY!)

I broke down on this sentence:

And we're going to raise a glass to the kick-ass Democrats on DU, who still give a fuck about this country, and are still willing to fight for the things that matter.

I think I'll go get a 6-pack and bring it home and cry in my beer.

73. It is just not as bad as it appears.
It would have been bad if the dems truly went down wimpering.

They (the gop) got a fight they did not see coming brought on by a ground roots movement run on the fly. So, maybe the internet is useful for something more than fundraising - you think??

If they were nervous before about whats going to happen in November - what do you think is going thru their minds now??

The big fight is in November - and I think they can't rig that one.

Joe

76. List of the 17 "Democrats" who voted against the filibuster
We DID do our best to stop all the terrible consequences of a Justice Alito on the Supreme Court, as these consequences were powerfully described by Senator Kerry, Senator Kennedy, Senator Menendez, and the other real Democrats who spoke out about why Alito should not be confirmed.

Here's a list of the 17 "Others" who voted to defeat the filibuster.

Akaka (HI), Baucus (MT), Bingaman (NM), Byrd (WV), Cantwell (WA), Carper (DE),
Dorgan (ND), Inouye (HI), Johnson (SD), Kohl (WI), Landrieu (LA), Lieberman (CT),
Lincoln (AR), Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO)

Toll free phone numbers for all Senators:
These work 24 hours a day... You can leave messages at night if the senator's mail boxes are not full.

Seems like there's a lot of work to do inside the Democratic party. But I'm sure it can be done; and that at one point most of the rest of the whole world will look up at the US again. Might be a long road, but it's worth it.

Never give up, never get the recent things let you feel down.

Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 06:54 PM by jhuth
THIS IS NOTHING compared to the amount of problems for Bush in 2006. We all know what the truth is and I still believe in this new age of the blogosphere to expose truth. We now have learned a lesson about the power of the internet, and did all these petitions/e-mails/phone calls etc too late. We need to focus on protecting the blogs, fighting against voter fraud and fighting the propagandist techniques used against the American people for political gain and influence. Beyond that we all know the people of America are starting to figure it out. Republicans are a one trick pony, in the end.

"They" had a head start in the media on this one. Trust me the Dems right now who voted for a vote on Alito did it with a bit of "shock and awe" over the incredible effort of the people to try to fight this. They struggle with the propaganda techniques of the right, and once again although some thought they had lost this battle. It is because they are as stunned as we are that America has become so delusional. A vote in a State election is a vote, and no matter how delusional the right is, they will vote. They are anticipating the inevitable flood of negative ads from the right that only need controversy as a means to lie.

I love the following site because it explains almost every technique "they" use. Go to the home page to see what worthy cause the research on this site was done for.

http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/index.html#ind...

I feel we the people are starting to figure it all out and have had enough. Our Senators are used to a legislative atmosphere ruled by these deceptive techniques. Some are beaten down and defeated, they are recovering from the political injuries of the last 3 years. We need to stand behind them in these times and let them know we understand, we forgive them, and we stand behind them for the greater cause of taking back our great nation.

We will NEVER give up!!! We are the people of America and we have had quite enough! Time for the next round, and we will win this time!

BTW SKINNER YOU ROCK!!!

Skinner, Earl G and Elad, THANK YOU! I don't know what I'd do without this community. AND WE WILL PREVAIL, I really believe that. I do believe that we surprised the status quo out there. There's more to the blogs than fundraising, and that there are millions and millions of us ready and willing to work for change. AND WE ARE ANGRY! The anonymity of the net allows even the most timid of us to have a voice and participate in the process.
The old lies, and the tried-and-true methods aren't working anymore. The MSM is a dinosaur. Witness the power of citizen journalists. And net activists. Witness the power of WE THE PEOPLE!!!!

to you and Earl G. and all the rest who've seen so much bad stuff pass here on DU since 2000 Selection.

I always say that the "Network" created here...will last and has been the Grandaddy of NEW ACTIVIST MOVEMENT.

Even with the "New Kids/Turks on the block" coming on the scene with "Blogs" ...this place for all it's warts and rabble rousing has alaws been a noble "Muckraiser in Chief," standing tall for ACTIVISM since 2001. For that, alone, all folks who still care about DEFENDING our DEMOCRACY should be THANKFUL!

And, while DU might seem at time like a big brawl.... the information here is more timely and DIVERSE than at any other site on the web and feeds the Blogosphere with experience in past activism and a "network" already in place with a mass group of participants. The connections made here have grown and prospered out there in our will to take back our Country and will still enable those of us who are involved in our local State's Government as "newbies" (because of our early connection with DU) a link to vital diversity of info and posts we can use in our fight against our DINO DEMS that are out there entrenched working against us.

I thank all the folks here..plus, those departed through death or disgust or just that there was no more time for connecting the dots and working for change. Many the foundations for a NEW PARTY working to rout out the travesties of the OLD DEMS are here and on a couple of other sites who now "GET IT."

A "connected blogosphere" and the "DU Think Tank" are out there working 24/7 all over America. One day...if we live long enough, and many of you will...the change here will be evident and they will write about it in the History Books.

The NEW PATRIOTS...THE NEW LIBERTY TREE! And to the "split of Lefty Progressives" who still support this site with "crossposts." Just because some are way Lefty doesn't mean they can't support more than one place at a time. :D

It's not the end of the world. But...shit...it really feels bad once again today...so I'll TOAST with a glass of wine to the efforts.

even the much maligned Bayh, Biden, and Hillary. They may not have wanted to filibuster, but they did something that Democrats have done little since 9-11, they fought back.

All 25 Democrats that voted against cloture will be redeemed when the Alito Court begins to dismantle the few rights we have left, whether we speak about reproductive rights, amy of the liberties that were enshrined in the Bill of Rights, or the Constitutional limits that once protected our Republic from an imperial Presidency.

It is trench warfare from now on!

128. No, you rock.
There's something that just astonishes me each and every time a big issue is at hand and Democratic leaders fail us. This was one of those times, but here's the thing that gets me. Most of us are not defeated! Yes, we are disappointd. But we know that the democracy "war" is the important thing for this country and the Constitution and that this battle, though perhaps one of the most important, is not the whole war. The "other side", however, is NEVER happy. That's because they know that no matter how many battles Republicans win, we have all lost with Bush in office. Not even this "win" makes that situation go away.

Plus, I'm hanging my hat on Alito's promise to follow the rule of law - even when it comes to convicting a president of wrong-doing. Can he be trusted? Time will tell.

This has been one shitty day, but then in my heart of hearts I didn't actually expect the filibuster to fly.

There was in fact something accomplished though today...we got a majority of our reps to actually back us--four years ago this wouldn't have been possible.

On the bright side to me this just proves that if every Tom Dick and Harry out there that doesn't like this crap administration (I mean average people not us political junkies) had known to call their reps and bitch--we would have had victory (the country would have had victory)

I'm just going to continue to make noise and hope for the best.

Enjoy your beer.

Now that Alito is on the Court, do you really think we can win ANYTHING in November? Even if we do win? What makes you think the evil cabal in power will even RECOGNIZE the outcome of the election (except of course, the bogus results that show a complete rout of the Democratic candidates across the country, courtesy of rigged voting machines)? I'm terribly afraid that this is the end of Democracy in this country. The bastards have no conscience, no morals, no ethics and are oblivious to the rule of law. Now they have their puppet Justice.

Sorry, registered Democrat for many, many years. Now, I'm a completely disillusioned Democrat. I was a delegate to the primary in Colorado and watched Ken Salazar's oponent, Mike Miles, take the primary. Mike Miles, progressive, educated, experienced in the State Department, retired Military, educator, he would have run rings around the spineless cretins who refused to support the filibuster today. But the Democratic Party here felt he might not beat the Repukelican who was running, so they threw all their support behind Salazar . . . and he refused to support the filibuster today.

I'm a precinct chair, I've knocked on doors, waved signs on election day, called people to get out and vote, everything I can do. But our elected Democrats are NOT listening to us, their constituents.

And, I'm serious about France. It is much preferable to life under Bush and his cabal.

Don't you dare call me a troll again.

I've had two beers this evening, and I do apologize for my outburst. All I can say is, "Welcome to the DU -- for whatever time you are here." And if and when you leave, "Au revoir, madame/monsieur/madamoiselle." (Regrettably, I have found no information on your gender or anything else that would give me a clue.)

As for me, I will stay here in Oregon and fight on. I understand France is beautiful in the spring, and we'll visit Paris next May, right around my birthday. Hey, let's meet under the Eiffel Tower!

In peace,

158. Apology accepted
It has been an awful day. I've been watching this administration in horror since the Iraq invasion and praying for anything that can stop them. I'm a mom, I have an eighteen year old son who is my life, he's still in high school but not for much longer. I have a conversation about once a week with the recruiters who call to ask him "what his plans for his life after graduation are" and am terrified that Bush will eventually call up a draft to feed the army he'll need when he goes after Iran, North Korea, Haiti, Aruba, who knows what's next?

I try to remain positive, hoping against hope that America will wake up, but I'm afraid it may be too late. DU has helped a lot, at least I know there are other people out there who see the truth.

Thanks, and take care

Take a look at what SCOTUS has done in the past 3 weeks in handing GW's conturd nation CRUSHING and HUMILIATING defeats:
1. It voted 6-3 to uphold Oregon's assisted suicide law;
2. It sent a pissant challenge to Roe back down to the lower courts.

You are projecting WAY too much pure evil into Alito.
The fact of the matter is this - SCOTUS rules on extremely arcane matters, and hardly ever on anything that's going to affect you and me.
Roe is the law of the land.

I have never posted a message before but I have come to the DU many times over the last few days for a shot of enthusiasm in this filibuster fight. This effort to keep Alito off the Supreme Court has really changed me in a profound way.

Over the last two days I have continuously called, emailed and faxed the senators; I even stayed home from work today so I could focus on calling. Throughout the day I noticed that my initial fear in calling the senators was turning in to fearlessness.

I realize the filibuster was defeated but my fearlessness continues. I will continue to email and call those senators and hold them accountable for their actions and I have to say that it feels damn good to do so! I am proud to stand with you all in this effort.

Excuse me while I go make a call to Senator Lieberman ...

I would vote you the person I would most like to have a beer with. It doesn't suck to be us. Who else would we be? I really appreciate you providing the forum where I can find people that understand. I am glad to have so many friends helping me man the ramparts and you introduced me to many of them. I salute you. Many years ago I served in the Navy and was attached to a unit that provided funeral honors for service members that departed. Doing that for a while will corrode your way of thinking. Collectively we vented in bizarre ways just to cope with what we were doing everyday. The movie Gardens of Stone portrays it fairly accurately. There is a toast in there that some may find in distaste but here goes, Here's to us and those like us. Damn few left most of them dead. I don't know why but that seems like it applies tonight. Drink up brethren for tomorrow we fight. Thanks again.

173. Obama said, "we'll probably lose", but he'd filabuster
You are right about the blogosphere, we are breaking the myth of the lone dissenter, we know we have a powerful voice of opposition and we are forcing the democrats to actually be democrats and oppose the republicans ON PRINCIPLE. When Obama made this disclaimer, I got the sense that democrats don't vote their conscience, they vote to be on the winning team. Enough already, be the oppostition party or get out or move over to the other side. Democrats that vote like republicans are the fall of the entire party.

179. Some random thought on all this:
I've been a long-time lurker at DU....Several of us at work always print out the idiot list every Monday, as it is essential reading....I just have few random thoughts on the Alito saga..

There were a million reasons to vote for Kerry over Bush..But none more important than the appointment of Supreme Court justices....I was fearful when Bush stole, whoops, I mean won back in Nov. 04 of him getting to appoint justices to the court...We have to hope that Stevens, Ginsburg, Breyer, Kennedy, & Souter stay on the court til at least 2009...The thought of GW replacing one of them is a truly frightening prospect.....Of course, if Democrats can win back some senate seats this Nov., at least that will narrow the gap....(And a quick bravo to Sen. Chaffe for voting against Alito!)...

I think we should continue to be active...I've written countless letters to the editor of numerous newspapers on all sorts of topics, I've called various Senators' offices about subjects important to me, & when those Swift-Boat drunks were dumping on Kerry, I remember one evening writing letters to many of the sponsors of Sinclair Media saying I won't ever but their products again....Also, there is a buy blue campaign (I saw it on this site a while back) where it lists all sorts of businesses' that donate to Democrats, & I REALLY make it an effort to support those companies & avoid the ones supporting the Repugs...So I think it's wise to let your voice be heard & even more important, stay at the hotels, eat at the restaurants, & fly the airlines, etc. who support Democrats....

Though certainly down about this Alito (and Roberts) appointments, we have to continue the fight...
Democrats are in a good position to win back the Senate seat from Santorum in PA & a few other seats as well...Remember, we were only Ohio away from winning in 04, & Bush is as unpopular as any president has ever been....There is definitely hope!

Thanks to the DU admin. for such a terrific site - you guys rule!!
