For 2008, a hypothetical Democratic victory

From the Meaningless but Mildly Interesting Polling Department comes a Hotline/Diageo poll on how registered voters view potential 2008 match-ups: John McCain beats Hillary Clinton, 45 percent to 40 percent; McCain beats Barack Obama, 39-35 percent; and McCain beats John Edwards, 40-27 percent. But in a sign that Democratic progress may not stop with 2006 -- assuming the Democrats can find and field the right candidate -- a generic Democratic candidate beats a generic Republican candidate, 40-27.

1. Because they don't really know McCain.
He's far less of a maverick than the media has made him out to be, and a good deal more conservative too.

Some people are SLOW to catch on.

3. Because McCain is the darling of the media
and so many people are swayed by their television sets.

4. It has to be the way the media portrays him
But what I can't understand is why is Condi so popular? I've seen similar polls showing that if she chose to run, she would beat most Democrats. :wtf:

13. Right ...
The MSM types even freely admit they have a typecast of this guy they follow ... He is the straight shooter, regardless of how much of a pandering butt kisser he is at this point ...

And, Condi ... Do not even get me started ... Do people realize this lady was the freakin national security director on 9-11, that the bulk of the plot unfolded under HER watch ??? THEN, she got PROMOTED to secretary of the state, and on her watch we have been fallen to the lowest point of our implicit power since the end of off WWII ... That NK and Iran got WAY out of control, that a serious Israel/Palistinian incident occured, that every third rate dicator from Hugo Chavez to Fidel Castro have made numerous overt acts of rebelliouness toward the US, that our prestige in the world is lower now than perhaps it ever has been ...

I mean, take Iraq out of the equalition, and her being ANY part of that should rule her out from jump street, and look at the fact that everything she has headed has turned to shit ... That, basically, outside of her strutting around like the self entitled lawyer she is, she has done, literally, NOTHING for this country, and HOW in the FREAK do people think of her as presidential ???

5. There was a time when I did like McCain.
Over the past few years, however, it has become clear to me that he is an opportunist. He'll go with whatever scores him the most points.

6. Im an Arizonan and had someone ask me a few days back my 'true' feelings for McCain
I plainly stated "Fuck him, hes no maverick. Hes spent six years of his life in a freaking box and then he laid down for torture and pissed on the Geneva Conventions and this vet(me)supports NO ONE in the military who fucks its own people over like that."

and up until this past election, he was the only successful vote I had ever cast cause i actually trusted him, a repug, back then.

7. The media have helped him portray himself as a moderate
instead of the far right fringe lunatic he really is.

Fundies don't trust him, though. He can't get elected without them, IMO.

8. they think he is everything
they see him as a good conservative, but also a moderate.

More and more of the country is getting to know him for the pathetic hack he really is, though.

10. Remember when he was even being talked up as a running mate for Kerry?
As if he would have ever done anything so brassy. But he milked it, being coy and not putting the kibosh on that for quite a while--because it was making him seem like an "everything" held in enough regard to be on the ticket of either party.

11. I admit, I once thought we was decent and respectable
that was back in 2000, though, when I saw the way Bush was slandering him.

But ever since then, I have observed how he won't even stand up for himself, and stubbornly supports that asshole Bush even though Bush represents everything McCain claims to be against.

He is unworthy of respect, and is just a republican hack.

9. McCain has a certain appeal, and if you haven't been paying attention...
... you might not be up to speed on his political wranglings.

Jon Stewart gave him the opportunity to tell us why he was addressing Jerry Falwell's Liberty University -- a complete reversal of his previous assessment of Falwell. McCain used his minute or two to bullshit Stewart, and Stewart was clearly disappointed. As was I. If it had only ended there...

I'm actually impressed with those numbers, lots of undecideds and McCain isn't winning in a blow out.

15. There has been no concentrated negative media against McCain, and instead
the media has always FALSELY represented him as a maverick instead of as the ENABLER he actually has been for BushInc.

Some strong ads blanketed for a month straight showing how he kissed Bush's ass from here to eternity should do the trick.

16. why I like McCain, and why I don't
First off I feel bad that McCain got screwed by all of the stupid push polling done to him in South Carolina. I wish the new congress would investigate that.

Second I respect the fact that McCain is a veteran. I am currently in the Army and I understand the sacrifices he made.

Now for why I don't like McCain. He has been too quiet over the last 6 years in opposing some of the things Bush has done. He finally did step out and say something about the use of torture and I respect that.

Second, I want a leader in the White House who can speak well. We need someone that will represent America. That is not John McCain. He is not as good of a speaker as John Edwards, Barack Obama, or Al Gore.

17. What is really dispecable is he got that push-polling in SC in '00
with the racist attacks on his daughter and now he fully embraces the Bushites--all to win the nomination. He is an opportunist.
