Chafee votes against Alito
Now we have to pressure him about the filibuster.

4. Confirmed by Hotline On Call
http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2006/01/chafee_to_vote.html

"One of themost anticipated vote announcements on Sam Alito is from liberal GOP Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who is facing an incredibly tough primary fight in RI SEN. Well, later this morning, Chafee will announce he's voting against Alito's confirmation. While this will make for big news and lots of crowing for Chafee's conservative GOP primary foe, Steve Laffey, it actually makes sense.

Voting for Alito would not have bought Chafee any new conservative friends but may have cost him some of his indie/left-leaning supporters, including NARAL, which would have made the general that much tougher. One thing even critics of Chafee can say is that his opposition to Alito is actually a consistent position on judicial nominations."

5. I just called his office
his lines are not busy - call him thank him for the no vote but to please vote no on cloture - I told them I was very thankful that Senator Chafee put the country before politics (which isn't exactly true since he is probably voting no because his constituents would kick his butt) but I said so many republicans put their party before the country. I also told them that a no vote is good but without supporting the filibuster the no vote won't help. CALL THEM PLEASE

As for Nelson - I'm in FL it has been impossible to get through to the DC office - but I did get through to the Miami office this morning - they're not taking names just zip codes - I told them I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM IN NOVEMBER IF HE DOES NOT VOTE NO ON CLOTURE and I won't - CALL BILL NELSON PLEASE.

6. Don't mean nothing if...
he doesn't vote for filibuster. The filibuster is the only vote that counts. It doesn't matter if he votes for or against Alito.
