Chafee to announce vote on Supreme Court nominee Alito today

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- US Senator Lincoln Chafee is holding a news conference this morning in Providence to announce whether he'll support Samuel Alito for the US Supreme Court.

Chafee, a Republican, has said he was concerned about Alito's views on issues such as abortion rights, the separation of church and state and warrantless electronic wiretaps. Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, who's challenging Chafee in a primary this year, says he would vote to confirm Alito.

1. He's just mocking all our Dem senators that held a
"special" new conference to announce their vote on Alito. Let me guess, he'll be for Alito too.

2. My prediction
He's going to vote yes on cloture and no on Alito.

It looks like snow outside. Maybe his plane won't make it to DC in time for the cloture vote.

He's in Providence right now. He was answering phones for the Meeting Street School telethon Saturday.

I've sent him three e-mails and called his office twice-- I asked him to abstain from the cloture vote if he was scared of the GOP. That's the only reason to vote no on Alito and yes on cloture.

I can't wait until November's election when the most Dem state in the country has two Dem senators.
