My brothers and I used to embellish Mom and Dad's stories about the Great Depression. The stories always ended with walking uphill to school ten miles in the snow with rags tied around our feet and then another ten miles uphill to get back home that night. AND WE WERE GLAD TO DO IT! Then we would sit back and laugh ourselves silly. Poor Mom and Dad. I don't know how they tolerated us.

55. Yes, my Mom and Dad walked five miles and swam five, to get to...

school during the Depression. And I myself can remember getting up without a bite of food in the house, on those cold winter mornings, back when Ike was pResident. My Dad would take me out in the field next to the barn and show me a rabbit track and say, "Now son, your breakfast is on the other end of those tracks!"

We were so poor, that all I ever had to take to school was turnip sandwiches. Man, I got so I hated the sight of turnips. After I grew up and I started going to work and I was still living with Mom and Dad, my Mom still put turnip sandwiches in my lunch every day, 'cause we were still so poor.

One day at work, I decided I'd had enough of the turnip sandwiches, so I sneaked to the lunch shanty early to steal someone else's lunch. I picked up all the lunch bags and buckets until I found the heaviest one and I went outside and took it up in the woods and sat down to eat what was inside. When I opened the bag I knew that there was someone at work who was just as poor as me, because inside the bag was 3 hickory nuts and a ball peen hammer.

My little sister was so skinny, she looked like a hockey stick with hair on the end of it. She'd go missing very often and we'd find her out where the dog had buried her, because he thought she was a bone. We Wuzz Po!
