Elizabeth Holtzman, co-author

Book TV interviewed Elizabeth Holtzman at Strand Book Store in New York City. Ms. Holtzman, a former democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, was on the House Judiciary committee when it voted to impeach President Richard Nixon. The author argues that George W. Elizabeth Holtman was elected to congress to represent New York's 16th district in 1971 at the age of 31. She served of the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment hearings of President Richard Nixon. She served in the house until January of 1981. Mark Halperin and John Harris
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/1006/btv101506_4a.ram

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Harris are the authors of "The Way to Win," a look at campaign strategies that have worked for the Clinton and Bush families. Mr. Halperin and Mr. Harris make the claim that the two families have learned from each other's successes and failures, despite their different styles. They argue that the current political climate favors candidates who emphasize ideological extremism and implement personal attacks against opponents, and they speculate about the most promising contenders for the 2008 presidential election.

Mark Halperin is the political director of ABC News and the creator of "The Note," a daily online journal posted on abcnews.com. John Harris is the national political editor of the Washington Post and the author of "The Survivor," a biography of Bill Clinton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Courage of Our Convictions: A Manifesto for Democrats
Gary Hart

In 'The Courage of Our Convictions" former Colorado Senator Gary Hart urges the Democratic party to reintroduce itself to the American people in terms of its basic principles. The author defines those basic principles as promoting a national community based on social justice, continuing coalitions with allies around the world, believing that we all owe something to our society and fighting for equality and justice for everyone. Senator Hart questions why Democrats who voted for the Iraq War didn't hold President Bush accountable for misleading them on the reasons for going to war. This event was hosted by the Boulder Book Store in Colorado.

Gary Hart represented Colorado in the United States Senate from 1975 to 1987 and ran for president as a Democrat in 1984 and 1988. He is currently a professor at the University of Colorado and Distinguished Fellow at the New America Foundation. War on the Middle Class: How the Government, Big Business, and Special Interest Groups Are Waging War on the American Dream and How to Fight Back
Lou Dobbs

In "War on the Middle Class" CNN's Lou Dobbs argues that both the Clinton and the current Bush administrations are responsible for eliminating millions of manufacturing jobs in America. At an event hosted by Rainy Day Books in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Dobbs explains that due to younger generations being less educated than their parents, rapid growth in illegal immigration, and a corrupt health care system, the gap between the rich and poor in the United States is larger than ever.

Lou Dobbs is the anchor and managing editor of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight and anchors The Lou Dobbs Financial Report, a nationally syndicated financial news radio report. Mr. Dobbs is also a columnist for Money magazine and U.S. News and World Report.

38. This was Really Good
I have not bought the book yet, but I listened to this talk on C-SPAN on Saturday afternoon, and you have to give Dobbs credit--this talk was given before a corporate, pro-business group, conservative, management, looked like a bunch of investment bankers, and the sign at the back of the room, of upcoming speakers, had shit like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. Lou Dobbs goes straight to the rich class, and delivers these speeches. The response of the audience was friendlier than a speech I heard a couple of years ago, also on C-SPAN, where Dobbs was talking about the corporate war on the middle class and poor, and how it is killing our country, to an audience of what seemed like stockbrokers and very corporate economists, and receiving one of the coldest, "sit-on-their-hands" non-response I have ever heard, yet Dobbs kept challenging them, kept explaining how things work, kept telling this rich corporate class that their greed is killing our whole country. This audience was similar, but better--there were some fans here, and some, (probably because things have gotten so much worse, under the criminal Republicans), seemed to understand, finally, the problems. They can't just take, and take, and take, and cut their own taxes, and take. This was a really good speech to listen to, because Lou Dobbs actually goes into the lion's den and faces the capitalists with this message. Dobbs, whatever else you might think, is really great on this anti-corporate-crime-and-greed message.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Broken Branch: How Congress is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track
Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann

In their new book, "The Broken Branch, " Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann describe Congress as a dysfunctional, weakened, and deeply divided institution. The authors acknowledge that Congress was designed to be "rough and tumble," but they say there has been a fundamental breakdown in the deliberative process and a collapse of congressional oversight over the executive branch. They also bemoan the increased importance of party affiliation, saying that Congress is more partisan today than at any time since the late 19th century. In this event at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC, Mr. Ornstein and Mr. Mann are joined by two former Speakers of the House -- Republican Newt Gingrich and Democrat Thomas Foley, who share insights from their personal experience.

Norman Ornstein is a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. He writes a weekly column on Congress for Roll Call and is an election analyst for CBS News. Thomas Mann is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution. William Styron, the novelist from the American South whose explorations of difficult historical and moral questions earned him a place among the leading literary figures of the post-World War II generation, died yesterday on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where he had a home. He was 81.

The cause was pneumonia, coming after many years of illness, his daughter Alexandra Styron said.

Mr. Styron’s early work, including “Lie Down in Darkness,” won him wide recognition as a distinctive voice of the South and an heir to William Faulkner. In subsequent fiction, like “The Confessions of Nat Turner” and “Sophie’s Choice,” he transcended his own immediate world and moved across historical and cultural lines.

25. Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right
On Sunday, November 5th at 4pm

Editorial Reviews

Book Description
The bestselling author of Stranger at the Gate provides an inside exposé of the Christian Right's agenda-and a playbook in how to resist it.

This Fall's midterm elections will see much discussion about the enhanced power of the Christian fundamentalist Right, leaving many people to wonder: just who are these people and what exactly do they want? What are their ultimate goals? The Reverend Mel White, a deeply religious man who sees fundamentalism as "evangelical Christian orthodoxy gone cultic," believes that it is not a stretch to say that the true goal of today's fundamentalists is to break down the wall that separates church and state, superimpose their "moral values" on the U.S. Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic rule, and ultimately create a new "Christian America" in their image. White's new book, Religion Gone Bad, is a wake-up call to all of us to take heed.

White is singularly qualified to write this exposé of the Christian Right because he himself was a true believer who served the evangelical movement as pastor, professor, filmmaker, television producer, author, and ghostwriter for such fundamentalist leaders as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Billy Graham, all of whom he got to know well. As he writes, "These are not just Neocons dressed in religious drag. These men see themselves as gurus called by God to rescue America from unrighteousness. They believe this is a Christian nation that must be returned forcibly to its Christian roots."

He is also a gay man, who made news when he came out more than twelve years ago. White has gained a unique understanding of the fundamentalist agenda because, since the fall of "godless Communism," homosexuality and abortion have become the primary targets through which fundamentalists have created fear, raised money, and mobilized recruits. Religion Gone Bad documents the thirty-year war that fundamentalist Christians have waged against homosexuality and gays and lesbians and offers dramatic, heartbreaking evidence that fundamentalist leaders-Protestant and Catholic alike-are waging nothing less than a "holy war" (jihad) against sexual minorities. By focusing on the current plight of gay people in this country, White addresses the wider issue that fundamentalist Christianity-like fundamentalist Islam-has become a threat not just to gays, but to all Americans who disagree with fundamentalist Christian "values."

About the Author
Mel White leads the charge against Christian fundamentalism in America. A former ghostwriter, consultant, and confidant to figures such as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Oliver North, White famously broke with the Christian Right in the 1990s, coming out as a gay man and writing his popular memoir, Stranger at the Gate. White lives with his partner in Lynchburg, Virginia-across the street from Jerry Falwell's church.
