Republican dirty tricks at NC early voting place--Watch out!
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 08:40 AM by mnhtnbb
In Chapel Hill, a Dem stronghold, a woman was asking people as they approached the voting center on Monday if they were registered Dems. (Kerry took the county by 66% in 04.) She was then handing out a list of "Dem judicial candidates." Judicial elections in NC are 'non-partisan'.
Only problem--the list was all Republicans!

Read the full story on how she was found out--and what it took for her to go away without giving her name to the media when she was confronted and finally admitted to the media that it was a list of Republican candidates.

http://www.newsobserver.com/703/story/505370.html

Beware of people handing out lists of endorsed candidates in non-partisan races!

1. Yep. Read that this morning.
Anyone out there that has judicial races, make your list before you go to the polls. Tell like minded people to familiarize themselves with these races.

2. If the woman had said she was a Republican...
I presume the list would have said, "These are Republican judges."

3. Someone should have called the cops
She should have been required to explain who gave her her marching orders. Somehow I have the feeling that Rove and his machine is VERY active in college Republican groups. After all, that's where he suckled on the milk of cold blooded lizards.

13. Temps. LOTS of temps in use by Reeps. Probably "in kind" donations from
temp company owners. These temps are being lied to and intentionally mistrained. They're being instructed to stand at the doors of polling places and worse. It's happening here in TX daily.

GOOD NEWS:

Once a 5.15 per hour (probably Dem) temp is told, kindly, that they're breaking the law and if they don't back off you "have instructions to call" the Sheriff/Cops/etc., they back off fast. So, GO TELL THEM. Kindly, please. They know not what they do. If they're snagged on a misdemeanor, the assignment will cost them more than they'll earn doing it. Help them out.

5. Campaigning at the polls is ILLEGAL, trickery or not.
I'm an election worker, and we have to tell people even to take of their **pins** before coming in to vote. (Maybe it's a state law -- anyway it's a good one.)

This is why we need poll watchers.

6. How about a pin saying "Grandmothers for Peace"?
Would you demand they take off that pin? or how about a "Support the Troops"? Are either of those considered political?

9. This was outside the polls--and originally discovered by an attorney
whose law partner is a NC State Representative! If he didn't call the cops (and there's no mention of it in the article) it's probably because what this woman was doing is not illegal--just deceitful.

19. We have a "campaign-free zone" about a hundred feet
from the entry to the polls. If you drive to vote, you're inside the zone when you get out of the car; it's meant to prevent this kind of shit from happening.

We have an official list of parties and candidates AT the polls, if people need it.

36. Yep
Here in my district we always see people with campaigning a good bit aways from the polling place. I like the rule too because it keeps all people equal and to where the voters aren't intimidated or anything.

In 2004 the electronic voting was so screwed up that the people of our fine state demanded and got some electronic voter reform. They can't count on the machines to fix it for them now.

28. what I want to know is...
who is going to analyze the results of early voting at this precinct (and perhaps other college campus precincts) and confirm that this strategy DID affect the voting results. I mean, if there are high levels of votes for Republican judges in a strongly Dem precinct this shoudl work as some proof that the election was interfered with.

31. We'll probably be left to hope that only one week of early voting
won't be enough to change the outcome. But you're right. This may have been happening at college campuses all over the state--and NC has plenty of college campuses.

people need to be extremely careful where they get their voting recommendations from. If voters weren't so gullible, this strategy wouldn't even be tried. College students who generally ahve no idea about local judges are easy prey, esp when the devil is disguised as one of them. :grr:

37. It happens in Louisiana every election

a group endorses your opponent and has them on their push card, you make a fake push card that replaces your name for your opponent's name or just change the numbers from your opponent's number to yours and leave the name. Or you make up some Republican sounding group name and list a bunch of Republicans for other offices and your name for what you are running for. Same done in reverse. This started as soon as the first push cards hit the street and someone had time to run to the printer.

39. of course, everyone's seen them that is part of GOTV
it's part of why you always want to drive your voters to the polls or are there when they get to the polls. It starts with flyers giving the number to call for a ride to the polls, have to be out and make sure the flyer's with your name have your actual phone number on it. There are flyers printed up with the number to "time and temp," or to your opponent's GOTV drivers.

Also have to remember in Louisiana we don't have party primaries, so it's not always Dem v Rep

41. talk to anyone else who was in the '95 governor's race

The primary was very fun with this stuff, Foster (R), Fields (D) and Landrieu (D).

One of the funniest ones had Mary's name and voter number with Cleo's picture beside it as if someone made a mistake intending to change only the voter number to Mary's and accidentally changed the name as well. Most think that one was put out by the Fields campaign. I actually thought at the time and still think that Foster's people put it out to further divide Democrats, and it did a bit.

There are many people who don't like dealing with GOTV, you know handling bags of cash and such, but hey, politics is a contact sport and it's very fun.
