'Shock and awe' on Afghan border
By M Ilyas Khan
BBC News

...

Motive

Monday's attack may create a similar controversy, with one media report claiming that the missile attack was launched by a US drone.

An eyewitness interviewed on the telephone by the BBC News website appeared to corroborate that view.

"We heard two blasts at about 4:50 am, whereas the Pakistani helicopters appeared a good 10 minutes later," the witness, who did not wish to be named, said.

The question is, why would the government risk another controversy at a time when it was close to signing an agreement with the militants?

Also, the law and order situation in the area has not been bad enough to warrant a surgical strike.

If there were any intelligence reports to justify an attack, they have not been shared with the media.

Some circles believe the attack was either conducted by the US, or under their pressure.

Others expect some political repercussions but think President Musharraf will weather this storm as he did the last one over the Damadola attack.

2. I'm aware it can be read that way.
I have no inside information as to the accuracy of either reading I had in mind. I want to know what part the Bushists had to play in this slaughter, if any. It's hard not to think that the people of Waziristan suspect they had quite a large role to play. That could have a major impact on the safety of Americans all over the world.

3. I think this was or may still be Roves October surprise..
I heard on the news this mroning that they have been survalling this Madasas for a while and that they had info that Sawahari (sp?) visited and the spritiual leader was supportive off him. My thought was that they were hoping to get Sawaharri and that would have been the big October Surprise that would be all over the news today. Ther is a complete imbargo on news getting into this area no one gets in no one gets out. Not even spritual leaders were allowed into the area to attend funerals. I would not be surprised if in a few days we start hearing reports of the possible demise of Sawarahrri in this attach perhaps just in time for the election look for this story (Sawaharri may be dead) to start emerging on Friday so the story may gain momentum over th weekend and get major play on the weekend talk feast in the final weekend before the lelection? Just a theory
