Final NYT/CBS poll before the election: Republicans are toast
by John in DC - 11/01/2006 10:16:00 PM

Utter disaster.

Fifty percent of independent voters, a closely watched segment of the electorate in such polarized times, said they intended to vote for the Democratic candidate, versus 23 percent who said they would vote for a Republican.

Among registered voters, 33 percent said they planned to support Republicans, and 52 percent said they would vote for Democrats. As a rule, these kind of generic questions — while providing broad insights into the national mood — are often imprecise as a predictor of the outcome of hundreds of Congressional races, where local issues and personalities can shape the result.

A 19% difference. Wow. I saw Katie Couric on Larry King, she said that this is the worst showing for any party since 1980 when the poll was first taken.

Oh God, then read this:

Americans have some clear notions of how government might change if Democrats win control of Congress: Beyond a quicker exit from Iraq, respondents said they thought a Democratic Congress would be more likely to increase the minimum wage, hold down rapidly rising health and prescription drugs costs, improve the economy and — as Republicans have said frequently in these closing days of the campaign — raise taxes.

- snip -

The poll found that just 29 percent of Americans approve of the way President Bush is managing the war in Iraq, matching the lowest mark of his presidency. Nearly 70 percent of Americans said Mr. Bush did not have a plan to end the war, and an overwhelming 80 percent said Mr. Bush’s latest effort to rally public support for the conflict amounted to a change in language but not policy.

1. Yes....
as Republicans have said frequently in these closing days of the campaign — raise taxes.

Yes, on those individuals and corporations who have raped the treasury for the last six years. Yes, we're....going...to....get....it...back.....and.....they....are.....going.....to......prison.

3. Boy, Are Americans Gonna Be Surprised!
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 11:12 PM by MannyGoldstein
This bunch of "Dems" ain't doing any of that kind of stuff - well, maybe a teeny bit. The corruption might be a little lower-key - for example, Clinton selling pardons was lower profile than Duke Cunningham's menu of services... and while they probably won't reverse Bush's destruction of the Constitution (keepin' the powder dry, you know), they might slow down some new outrages... but don't look for a letup in the unrelenting attack on the Middle Class.

5. Not over yet. 46% say their congressperson should be reelected in poll
The 18% Dem margin is misleading. In another question, 46% of respondents said that their congressperson deserved to be reelected and 44 % said it was time for a new person. In 1994 in the same poll before the election, those numbers were 37% to 52%.

6. I never count my chickens before they're hatched.
But every bit of good news helps lower the overall stress level.

16. LOL That's hilarious.
Good of you, a Canadian buzzard, to adopt Canadian chickens who are really Canadian parrots.
Somehow I'm trying to get Canadian geese - who are really Canada geese - in this joke, too. :P

13. most districts
are not competitive. About 330 members will win with 70 percent of the vote. So those re-elect your own member numbers are quite low. In 94, there were more competitive district than there are now.

17. Plus most of this poll was taken before Kerry's non-story
And even without that story, making this the last pre-election poll is stupid with a whole week left.

8. At least if these numbers hold
Americans think the Dems are going to raise taxes, and they're voting for them anyway. So, when they don't raise taxes on anyone except the very wealthy, they'll be pleasantly surprised.

They don't have to raise taxes, just stop giving it away, I mean a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money.
