Is George W. Bush preparing to flee his country? asked Marina Menéndez Quintero in Havana’s Juventud Rebelde. According to Paraguayan newspapers, Bush’s father, the first President Bush, recently bought an enormous estate in Paraguay—between 100,000 and 175,000 acres, depending on which report you believe. The estate falls right inside the watershed of the Guarani Aquifer, one of the planet’s largest freshwater reserves. Paraguay, incidentally, is the site of a U.S. military base, installed a few years ago after Paraguay promised to grant American soldiers immunity from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. Surely it is no coincidence that last month, just after Paraguay announced that it would not renew the immunity treaty, first daughter Jenna Bush was spotted in the country “on a secret trip”—perhaps to try to convince the Paraguayans to reconsider. At first, authorities denied that Jenna was in the country, but later they gave out the unlikely explanation that she was on a charitable mission for UNICEF. Few believe that cover story. Someday, George Bush may be brought to justice over war crimes committed in Iraq. Only by denying him asylum can the Paraguayans keep “their integrity, and their sovereignty.”

ONE day in 2000 the people of Puerto Casado, a small town in Paraguay's inhospitable Chaco region, were shocked to learn that the ground had been sold under their feet—and that their new lord and master was the Rev Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed messiah who leads the Unification cult, better known as the Moonies. Mr Moon's acolytes soothed locals' fears by promising all sorts of grand projects to make the town rich, from a meat-packing plant to an eco-tourism resort.

Five years on, with little sign of these promises being kept, hundreds of the town's people recently travelled 400 miles (640km) to the capital, Asunción, to lobby Congress to free them from the cult.

("BFEE" = "bush family evil empire") The Bushes and Moon are longstanding partners in crime. It's perfectly natural that they would be buying up land in the same area. It's a major drug and arms smuggling crossroads, and the land in question sits atop the largest aquifer in South America.

A new U.S. military base has been recently built in Paraguay as well, btw. There are deep roots to this entire situation.

By the way, I just ran into Ken Lay and Elvis at the local 7-11 stocking up on beef by-products and whatnot. Asked them what they were up to, they said they were on their way over to Karl Rove's place to do some fine-tuning on the nationwide Diebold voting system so everything goes smooth on the 7th.
