It is not just a matter of pulling out the troops. The troops are there to protect the war profiteers who are making money hand over fist at the expense of the Iraqi people and the US taxpayer. In the meantime, unemployment in Iraq is so high that people have plenty of time to prepare attacks in between brief moments of electricity.
If someone asks you "Oh yeah, well how would you fix Iraq?", say:
1 - Pull out ALL the profiteers immediately, then the troops. No timeline or "benchmarks". Just do it.
2 - Give reparations so the Iraqi people are in charge of rebuilding their own country, like they did efficiently and cheaply in 1991.
3 - Return the oil to the Iraqi people, and allow foreign oil companies to deal with Iraqis instead of the US, in fair dealing.
4 - Donate the military bases and the Green Zone to the Iraqis to turn them into museums and Universities.
I believe that giving people jobs will be much more efficient in reducing the insurgency and Civil War than any bombing or torturing.
Riverbend's cousin is a contractor, and during the Bremer "presidency", he bid on rebuilding something in Baghdad, something like a million dollars. Halliburton or KB&R was awarded the contract instead for 40 million, and the rebuilding still hasn't happened. I might have the details wrong, but the essence right.
Why nobody in Congress (that I know of) says that eliminating the companies that are stealing Iraq from its people, and $$ from you and me is the first order of business, is a mystery to me. This is the solution. It's easy, if you set your mind to it. The silence is deafening!
