Ohmygod! David Gregory smackdown!

18. Ironically, with semantics
he described the difference between "benchmarks" and the cut and run defeatocratic "time tables", ignoring the fact that Iraq is moving further AWAY from achieving those benchmarks every day. So he's just going to have to make the benchmarks easier to achieve, which is, in practical terms, no different from time tables.

be a good benchmark. Aren't benchmarks supposed to be quantifiable?

53. Here is the exchange... as reported by media matter's
http://mediamatters.org/items/200610250011

From President Bush's October 25 press conference:

GREGORY: Mr. President, for several years, you have been saying that America will stay the course in Iraq, you're committed to the policy. And now you say that, no, you're not saying, "stay the course," that you're adapting to win, that you're showing flexibility. And as you mention, out of Baghdad we're now hearing about benchmarks and timetables from the Iraqi government, as relayed by American officials, to stop the sectarian violence. In the past, Democrats and other critics of the war who talked about benchmarks and timetables were labeled as defeatist, "Defeatocrats," or people who wanted to "cut and run." So why shouldn't the American people conclude that this is nothing from you other than semantic, rhetorical games and all politics two weeks before an election?

BUSH: David, there is a significant difference between benchmarks for a government to achieve and a timetable for withdrawal. You're talking about -- when you're talking about the benchmarks, he's talking about the fact that we're working with the Iraqi government to have certain benchmarks to meet as a way to determine whether or not they're making the hard decisions necessary to achieve peace. I believe that's what you're referring to. And we're working with the Iraqi government to come up with benchmarks. Listen, this is a sovereign government. It was elected by the people of Iraq. What we're asking them to do is to say, "When do you think you're going to get this done? When can you get this done?" So the people themselves in Iraq can see that the government is moving forward with the reconciliation plan and plans necessary to unify this government. That is substantially different, David, from people saying, "We want a time certain to get out of Iraq." As a matter of fact, the benchmarks will make it more likely we win. Withdrawing on an artificial timetable means we lose. Now, I'm giving the speeches -- you're asking me why I'm giving this speech today? Because there's -- I think I owe an explanation to the American people and will continue to make explanations. The people need to know that we have a plan for victory. Like I said in my opening comments, I fully understand if the people think we don't have a plan for victory, they're not gonna support the effort. And so I'll continue to speak out about -- about our way forward.

10. I love David Gregory!! I only saw this bit of the news conference
was home letting the dog out for a sec, and turned on the TV while I waited for that special beagle "I'm done. Let me in" bark. And then it happened...David Gregory asked the Crazy Monkey about benchmarks and timetables. Then the beagle barked, and I had to go back over to the office.

But I saw what has to have been the best moment in the whole news conference.

I love David Gregory!

32. One thing that keeps standing out to me
This man cannot build an argument. He does not have the ability to take a position and defend it logically. That is apparent to us as citizens but a couple years ago, one of his professors from his college days came out and told the story of what it is like to have bush in the classroom.

One of the things he said was that bush would throw out a position on an issue in the classroom. It would be critically dissected by his colleagues, as his should be, and bush would be unable to defend his position. He would then lie about his position, saying he never said that.

All we are seeing is bush spitting talking points. That's all he can do and even that necessitates speechwriters and a teleprompter.

This is pathetic. This is the most basic tenet of a college education and here this idiot is, flaunting his Ivy League degree. Disgraceful.

Cher

He was entering a restaurant as I was sitting there having drinks with my bro who was in town. Very expensive restaurant--drinks cost $15. We didn't stay for dinner. Dinner generally runs $600 for two. David came in by himself and I don't know who he met up with, I didn't want to stare. He is much slighter than he appears on TV. But, very handsome.

58. ????? "Benchmarks" vs. "Timetables"
Benchmark--
A means by which individuals are compared and judged

Timetable--
An organized list, as of procedures, activities, or events

I really think he's splitting hairs here, and wondering if his "base" will understand all this...
