WTF isn't sexist?
really, our language is permeated in he/she. That's the way we're made. I can call a male reporter an "asshole" with no retribution or to call a female reporter by anything other than "female reporter" without adjectives or metaphor is verboten in PC circles?

Language is a wonderful colorful thing and should be used sparingly but prudently. Terms such as (x) or (y) will always be used and to bar them for the prudence of a few easily offended serves no one... I mean NO ONE. If it bothers you, don't read it, don't try to force your rules on others. THat's what I thought we were here. A big tent with room for people who are different than ourselves.

Peace to my friends, let compassion overtake law.

1. I strive to be uniformly offensive to all...
...and to piss everyone off equally without respect to gender, race, or political persuasion.

8. Reminds me of Hellacopters lyrics...
Gotta-gotta-go-go light up the ignition
Gotta kill that sacred cow
Please spare me all of your futuristic visions
'Cuz I gotta get some action
Gotta get some action now!

22. And that reminded me of a Detrol Commercial
"Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now, gotta go, gotta go, gotta go!"

We could hijack this and turn it into a stream of consciousness thread

9. It wasn't one of my threads or one that I was involved in...
I have just seen a few threads locked on the premise of being sexist that I thought had nothing to do with sexism but rather an unfortunate descriptor that a few took offense to.

5. PC speech is a good thing in theory.
I understand that speech shapes our ideas and all, but if you go around shoving it down peoples throat they're just going to have a knee jerk reaction. It's not a good way to win hearts and minds or change peoples behaviors and speech.

I personally use the rudest most obsene langauge there is, but ussually only around close friends.

7. I hear ya. I cringe whenever I see the 'herstory' instead of history
it is so over the top ridiculous it isn't even funny. But I've never told the people who type it to stop using it. (though behind the scenes I will mock the hell out of it LOL)

13. My b/f and I have a running mock argument
that stems from my own theatre days. I prefer to call any actor worth their salt an actor, while b/f dearest insists that all female actors be called actresses. My daughter pointed out that all union actors have a SAG card. Screen ACTORS Guild.

I'm for equality in all things. If a woman acts like a prick, then she is a prick. Not a bitch; a prick.

Political correctness may well be the death of us all.

11. I got flagged a few months back....
....for using the "B" word in reference to a female TV reporter. I did it a couple of times I believe over a few days or something. Now I understand - at least I think I do - that the "B" word is ok here on DU, or it is under certain circumstances?? It's a very touchy subject, language like that, I realize that. Still, I don't think I was saying anything particularly inflammatory. Others disagreed, and that's fine. I can take it. It is odd though, because "fuck", "asshole", "motherfucker" and other such curse words pop up here all the time with nary a peep.

Anyhoo....

16. C'mon, how hard is it really
to scour every word of every sentence like a proctologist looking for polyps -- the dreaded polyps of political incorrectness? I personally dream of a day when all written and spoken communication is just as bland and goes down just as easy as a nice bowl of rice pudding.

28. guess it is that big tent problem thing
trying to please each group without offending the other. Eventually you just end up in either one huge argument creating more splinters or you all sit around humming tunes (just be careful which ones ya hum).

Then there is word stealing. Like Hummer. Now it's an SUV, used to be something more ejoyable in my day :) So if a word changes meaning to a group (like gay now compared to gay back in the day) what is one to do if they are part of the big tent but older and used that word (or others like it) - should they now be shafted.

Not an original thought, but it bears repeating. PC nonsense, especially from so called progressives drives me nuts. Then again I have a bad habit of calling people on it.

37. So how do we be a big tent if we cannot dumb down our barbs enough to
welcome people. Asshole is not a male thing. It is entirely appropriate to the people it is directed to. It denotes behaviour. I think we should just accept that some words don't need to be added to the vocab.

Funny this thread. Cause often the issue comes up and people spend minutes discussing how we try to work together and be sensitive.

I suppose it just depends on the mood in the DU.
