Dammit, it sucks but nicotine eases anxiety. However, no one who cherishes their health continues to smoke.

Like with other drug addictions (alcohol is a drug), RELAPSES are a part of the recovery process.

To all you former smokers: you have not truly QUIT but "working your program" of recovery.

All of us so called ex-smokers are tempted from time to time. Come on, look within and be honest - once in a while, you are tempted?

What you say is true ... recovery from addiction is a lifelong process. I've had more than my share of slip-ups ... I'm not sure that one's ability to quit is linked to intelligence.

As a former smoker I just can't muster sanctimony (actually I don't want to) I am NOT suggesting that you are sanctimonious ... addiction is a horrible thing (be it heroin, cig's, alcohol...) I feel compassion and would want to offer support.

I'm certified in Addiction Counseling but feel humbled to assist people who are doing their best to recover from addiction. I think that I'm a better counselor because I am a recovering Nicotine addict. What I have learned is that Alcoholism has a definite genetic component. Don't get me wrong, if you're dedicated, you can drink yourself into alcoholism - but it does run in families.

My best friend will not drink at all out of fear that she will be like many members of her immediate family, i.e., alcoholic.

I'm off topic but just wanted to convey - like many of us who can NOT ever have one cigarette again without the danger of immediate relapse - many people can't have one drink without relapsing. What is difficult - is the process of discerning the difference between Alcoholism and Problem Drinking in our young people. :shrug:

Addiction is horrid! I've encourage young people to NOT EVER start smoking in order to forgo the pain of dedicating oneself to a lifetime recovery program.

My take on the OP (op'er correct me if I'm wrong) was that it was ridiculous to vilify a person soley related to whether they are addicted to cig's.

I think we all know cigarette smoking is very deleterious to your health (and those around you) ... does that mean smokers are stupid or evil? I come down on the side that indicates that they are addicts that made a poor choice in their youth (I don't know anyone that started smoking later in life), when they felt invincible and now pay the consequences with a very strong addiction.

There seems to be very little affordable help for cig addicts and my understanding tis that nicotine is extremely addictive.

and a smoker. I am taking the newest anti-smoking prescription drug - Chantix. It's only been 4 days on this med, but I am hopeful that I will quit. It is $120 a month for about 2 to 3 months, but very much worth it.

One day I looked at a full pack and said, that's it, I will never smoke again for the rest of my life, and threw them in the garbage. No will power involved.

work for everyone. Quitting is an extremely personal event that changes dramatically from person to person. Just because you had some certain calling one morning doesn't mean someone else will. Someone else might need medication or otherwise to assist them, no matter how mentally strong they are trying to be. I think it was completely wrong for you to tell that poster that they can't be hopeful. Of course they can be. Some will try patch after patch and pill after pill and none were good enough in combination with their will power to kick the habit. So with each new med comes new hope that this time, combined with whatever will power the person has, it will be enough to kick the habit. Don't be so quick to dismiss somebody else's attempts at quitting because they don't align with how YOU kicked the habit.

Fact is, all any of us should ever be is 100% supportive of anyone trying, and encourage them as much as we can to keep it up. Anything else only hurts, not helps.

in your brain, so it is suppose to make smoking taste bad. I am a nurse who has spoken with the drug reps selling this drug and they have had success with this drug. I have quit before as well, many times and for long periods. This med is suppose to kick in after one week. I am very willing to stop smoking or I wouldn't have made a trip to the doctor to get the prescription, so I am confident that I am in a place in my life where I want to quit. Thanks for your concern and words of wisdom.

51. Yes, Wellbutrin worked great

but then I would get stressed out and tell myself that I needed a vice and I would start smoking again. I tried Wellbutrin a few times, and each time it was less effective. Chantix is newest anti-smoking drug in 10 years. This time I think that I can do it because I am older and more sure of myself. Plus I'm tired of being tired, so I think health is a good motivating factor. Also, I'm dating again and most guys don't want to date a smoker according to the profiles that I have been looking at on the dating sites.
