What If Joe Lieberman Gave the Senate Back to the Republicans?
Just think about this very real possibility for a second: The Democrats win back the Senate by a one vote margin after a mighty struggle. They pull off a stunning victory in Tennessee, they put away Missouri and Ohio, they win everywhere else and they retain New Jersey. And then they walk back into the Senate, Joe Lieberman switches sides, and everything that we have all worked for goes to absolute waste!

If you thought we hated Lieberman now, wait till you get a load of us then. There is no possibility that is more disheartening and more repulsive - and, unfortunately, more real.

He is already furious with the rest of his Democratic colleagues for not supporting him in the general election against Lamont. He already agrees with the Republicans on every major foreign policy issue. He even went out of his way last week to say he would vote for John Bolton.

With Lieberman in the Senate, even if all the Senate races break for the Democrats, the White House will still get their way on every foreign policy issue. You wonder why we fight so hard against this wolf in nonpartisan clothing. I'm afraid Lieberman thinks that nonpartisan is another word for Republican.

1. Who cares about Joe?
He abandoned his party for power. He's a nothing in my book.

4. In that situation, Lieberman would give the Senate to the Republicans-
even if he hadn't been opposed in the primary.

Lieberman's loyalties are to himself and the Bush GOP. In the situation described there, he'd have to drop the window dressing and just be who he really is.

6. This is of course assuming Ned Lamont doesn't win.
If Ned wins, then Lieberman is a moot point.

However if Ned loses, Lieberman could be a very loose cannon. He could switch sides. He ought to sit as an independent, but since his voting record seems to mirror that more of the R's, he ought not to be relied upon. The Democratic Party could end up with 50 senate seats, the R's with 49, and Lieberman with the casting vote (with Darth Vader of course).

We'll see what happens election day. Too close to call.

Mark.

7. But Lieberman is a Republican. Wikipedia says so!
Check out this Wikipedia entry for "Democrat Party":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat_party

Many Republican elected officials use the term. They include President George W. Bush <1>, Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay <2>, Senator Charles Grassley <3>, Congressman Steve Buyer <4>, and Senator Joe Lieberman <5>.

11. But what does Fox News say? Have they put an "R" next to his name?
That's when it becomes official.

10. Who Says A Repugnican Or Two Might Not Come Over
It happened in '94...Shelby and Ben Nighthorse-Campbell switch parties. I could see an Olympia Snowe...who surely will be isolated as one of the lone GOOPies in the Northeast and with no power base inside her party. Harry Reid could offer her seniority to come on over.

The big thing the Democratic leadership should and must do is announce that if Liebermann wins, even if he caucuses with the Democrats, he is stripped of his senority...just like what the Repugnicans did with Bob Smith when he bolted...force him to start over again.

13. That would be far too definitive an action for Joe
He'll simply attempt to hold both sides hostage. Whoever bows lowest gets his support for their bill. And he'll spend a great deal of time in front of the cameras sadly talking about the lack of bi-partisanship in Congress. How lonely he is in the struggle. How much more mature than anyone else.

Blech. But that would be completely in Joe's character.
