Anybody Watch "Deadwood"?
I am really convinced that (intentionally or not) that George Hearst is a perfect parallel for the United States and it's attitude toward the world (and now space).

That is, if you play along with our interests we'll leave you alone (E.B. Farnum) - If you in any way hinder our quest for exploitation you will be crushed (Elsworth). When needed we will send our brawn to 'show' our adversaries our power (The Captain). I'm sure Swearengen has some parallel too.

1. absolutely
He was pure evil, set out to destroy everything he couldn't own or take advantage of. I saw lots of repuke characteristics in him. I miss that show sooooo much.

16. My problem in the beginning (almost made me forego this great
show) was that I didn't know who the characters were and what they actually did.....their history etc. There were so many. I hung in and I am glad that I did. As I mentioned, watching it with the commentary on explains who the characters are and the history of Deadwood.

Try it again.

5. And
Yep - the other thing i found striking is how he is all 'down home' friendly and cordial until you happen to be in his way - then he'll "offer" you a way out by completely selling out to him (Mrs Garret) - And if you don't do it - the wheels of war begin to spin into motion.

7. I have seen Season 1 and am waiting for Netflix to send Season 2.
I love this show. It's so authentic. If you look at the special features, you will understand just how authentic it is. The swearing, at first, was a little unnerving (and I am no prude), but once I saw the special features and realized that's how people spoke in those days...I understood.

Can't wait for Season 2 + 3.

13. OMG! He is wonderful. Did you see the commentary with
Ian who plays Swearenen and the guy who plays Seth? I could watch it over and over.

10. Wonderful interchanges on that show.
The show uses vulgar language and a stylized conversation to great effect.

Ellsworth is a crusty prospector, and Joanie Stubbs is brothel madame.
Ellsworth: Well'm, I've got myself a working gold claim.
Joanie Stubbs: Well, sir, is that a damn fact?
Ellsworth: A hell of a working gold claim, and if we knew each other better I'd throw "fucking" in there somewhere.
Joanie Stubbs: If you did I'd try to catch it.
Ellsworth: A working fucking gold claim, Joanie, and thank you for allowing me my full range of expression.

Calamity Jane: drunk all the time, still a great shot, and prone to swearing. EB Farnam, lacky of Al Swearengen.
E.B. Farnum: Be brief.
Calamity Jane: Be fucked!

Al Swearengen is the town boss and runs a whore house/casino/bar.
Al Swearengen: You want a blow job while I talk to you?
Judge: No.
Al Swearengen: I wasn't offering personally

Trixie: once one of Al Swearengen's whores, but now free
Trixie: Tread lightly who lives in hope of pussy.
