Military Deaths
October 15, 2006

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq or who died at a military hospital of their injuries:

Shane T. Adcock, 27, of Mechanicsville, Va.; captain, Army. Adcock was killed Wednesday when a grenade struck his Humvee while in a convoy in Hawija, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Julian M. Arechaga, 23, of Oceanside, N.Y.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Arechaga was among three Marines killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Raymond S. Armijo, 22, of Phoenix; specialist, Army. Armijo was among four soldiers killed Oct. 2 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Nicholas A. Arvanitis, 22, of Salem, N.H.; corporal, Army. Arvanitis was killed Oct. 6 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Bayji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Brandon S. Asbury, 21, of Tazewell, Va.; sergeant, Army. Asbury was killed Oct. 7 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Shane R. Austin, 19, of Edgerton, Kan.; private first class, Army. Austin was killed Oct. 8 when a grenade struck his tank in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

Jon E. Bowman, 21, of Dubach, La.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Bowman was among three Marines killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Dean R. Bright, 32, of Roseburg, Ore.; private first class, Army. Bright was among four soldiers killed Oct. 4 when their unit was attacked with small-arms fire and a bomb exploded while they searched a building in Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Timothy R. Burke, 24, of Hollywood, Fla.; specialist, Army. Burke was among four soldiers killed Oct. 4 when their unit was attacked with small-arms fire and a bomb exploded while they searched a building in Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

2. Reading this list every week is something I feel obliged to do
It breaks my heart to do it, especially when some of the names are of 19 year olds. But we need to do it and remember all these lost lives, lost for nothing.
