Chicago anti-Bush protest and Duckworth v Roskam debate
I just got home and thought I'd share a few thoughts....

Protest: It wasn't as crowded as I would have hoped (but I never think these things are as crowded as they should be in Chicago). I am terrible at estimating numbers but perhaps there were 100. The enthusiasm however was HUGH!!111!! Several people were in Halloween costumes which made it fun. I always get a big charge out of doing stuff like this but the hour this was being held made the commute back and forth from the western suburbs into a real problem. I only made it by 5 pm into the city by the skin of my teeth and frankly, I'm not sure I was in time, lots of black limos were already zipping past... but I shrieked and waved my sign and had a few laughs with some folks in the back. C'est la vie.

I hightailed it quickly out of there since the commute back to the debate was a Chicago rush hour traffic nightmare. I made it in time to stand in the back of the debate room (by the way, the organizers did NOT plan on the crowd. at. all. That would be my biggest gripe on this otherwise really well-done debate. Many people were shut out of the event and had to listen to the audio only in a crowded vestibule.)

Tammy Duckworth hit it out of the park during the debate. Yes, she talks too fast, yes she rushes her delivery but she is funny and her UNpolished presentation comes off better than Roskam's practiced schtick. Roskam didn't directly answer a lot of the questions and made several pointed jabs which Tammy Duckworth handled really well, for example:
1. On Tony Resko, a Blago aide who was the focus of Patrick Fitzgerald's recent indictment, Roskam tried to paint Tammy as taking his tainted money and being tainted by association. She deftly turned that back on Roskam by pointing out that he had no problem standing next to Bu$h tonight who also took campaign funds from him.
2. Roskam tried to say that Tammy was a Rahm Emmanual puppet and challenged her to name just 1 thing that she disagreed with Rahm about. Without a moment to think, she threw out 2 or 3 things that she and Rahm don't see eye to eye on (line items veto power for the Prez, and earmarks).

She definitely made her points that he is an NRA head who wants no restrictions on guns including assault weapons. She pointed out his rabid evangelical freakiness on abortion, stem cell research and more. Anyone who might have initially questioned her ability to handle debate should have those fears erased. She can debate.

I thought she was really effective. She used her wheelchair instead of walking which underscored her service and sacrifices without having to say it out loud. She had supporters who were also in wheelchairs who she pointed out as real live potential stem cell research beneficiaries. She had A LOT of vets there in support of her. A LOT!

The topic that garnered the most questions from the audience was on environmental issues, specifically global warming! (yay!) I was blown away by that since this is a very red district which doesn't historically care one bit about this kind of issue (taxes, schools, and the evangelical faith typically dominate!)

One last thing: C-Span was there! (and a whole shitload of other media). They are going to air the debate so watch for it if you couldn't be there. I'm the middle-aged blonde woman, way in the back trying to peek around the 6 footers who were in front of me, along the wall with about 300 other standing room only attendees who managed to slip past the police to get in to the over-capacity hall.

1. I would have headed over to the debate IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT IT
How come nobody posts stuff like this in the ILLINIOS SECTION. Yeah I am a little dissappointed that the section is a graveyard most of the time.

Will there be more debates? Where was this one?

2. Great question. The debate was at COD in Glen Ellyn
I only heard about it because I have done a bit of volunteer phone work for the Duckworth campaign. I was at the campaign headquarters on Tuesday and they were hammering the event there in Lombard.

Why isn't more shit posted on the Illinois forum?! Hello, earth to other Illinois people, post more on the IL forum! (me too  )

It was the drive to Chicago that was a bitch.

One other funny moment: Tammy totally pre-empted Roskam's cutesy intro of his 4 children (Tammy does not have children) by pointing them out herself! She drew the straw the indicated that she would give her intro first, so she managed to compliment the kids which meant that when Roskam brought them up using almost the exact same words, it sounded so false and rehearsed (which is exactly what she was hoping for). Heh. She was really good actually. Better than I thought she'd be.

Another aside, the audience had been warned over and over not to interrupt - outbursts, applause, laughter - whatever, so what do Roskam's kids do when the debate is about to start? They holler, "we love you Daddy!"

That was met by dead silence. Whatever the Roskam campaign thought they'd garner with that wasn't what they expected I suppose.

5. I wish Duckworth would explain what an "assault weapon" is
Near as I can figure, it's nothing more than a catch-all phrase for semi-automatic firearms that the Violence Policy Center has decided civilians cannot be trusted with.

That said, Duckworth needs to drop the gun issue. It's hurting Democrats across the nation every time she even hints at banning firearms.

6. In the debate she pointed out that she only wants to ban AK-47 type
assault rifles.

She stated that military style weaponry wasn't appropriate on the streets of America.

Otherwise she feels that hunting type rifles, handguns and anything else is fine. I repeat, she is NOT trying to ban any other kind of firearm other than military assault rifles like the AK-47.

In her words, "I take the same position as Henry Hyde".

7. And if I happen to own an AK-47?
Don't get me wrong. Tammy Duckworth is a fine human being who sacrificed more for her country than most of us ever will, but when she talks about how certain semi-automatic firearms aren't "appropriate on the streets of America," she's just recycling the same old tired talking points from the gun-control industry.

If Chicago wants to outlaw semi-automatics, fine. But if lawmakers try to bring back a nationwide ban, they are in for a world of hurt.

8. Heh. I couldn't point out one gun from another
Honestly, I'm not versed in the issue. Bottom line for me: she wants to uphold the second amendment with certain provisions. I can live with that. I can't envision needing an AK47 to hunt or what have you. I see my sweet kids and try to imagine why anyone would need one of those... honestly, I wasn't trying to get the thread derailed with gun control issues.

I inherited my grandfather's 22 rifle. It has lived in the empty space above my office, wrapped in a sheet, above the tiles, along with a box of bullets. It's been cleaned, greased, fired and tested by others more knowledgable than my husband or I. I've had A LOT of offers to buy it by those who know, guys who handle guns regularly, and my naturally pacifist nature is inclined. Then I think about where our country may go, and I let it sit there.

Someday I'll practice on some squirrels perhaps....

I like a lot about Tammy. I hope she beats Roskam and for my part, I'm working hard to make sure that happens. That would be a real victory for IL #6.

Peace!
