My son just called to let me know that he was alright in case I heard anything on the news....how much do you bet that there won't be anything on the news?

1. I'm sorry your son is in harm's way, madmunchie.
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to turn the news back on to see if the camp is mentioned. Also, I thought all was safe in the Kurdish area? Guess not...

3. They get hit or I should say fired at every other day or so. This was an
all out attack. There are fires and some vehicles inside of the camp that were blown up

Thank you for your concern.

5. Yes, it is, they tried to make them give up their cell phones awhile
ago. But it didn't work. Their "internet" cafe will probably be shut down for awhile.

4. First of all, I am glad your son is okay and I pray for his safe return
Second, the corporate media minimizes the reporting of attacks on US troops and installations, just as they underreport the number of civilian casualties (the latest Lancet Report of over half a million Iraqi dead was quite an eye popper).

Third, our troops will remain in harm's way for as long as Bush is allowed to hold the reigns of power. Bush will never admit defeat or error, no matter how many people get killed because of him.

6. I agree with everything that you said. Mosul was supposed to be
such a safe area..... That is also a bunch of garbage

16. Afghanistan was also supposed to be "safe"
We have Indiana Guard men and women serving in what was supposed to be "safe" Afghanistan, and nothing could be further from the truth.

8. And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting everywhere, gave proof
through the night--there's an insur-gen-cy there!

Glad your son is ok.

9. Very thoughtful of your son to call, but I bet you are right
that it will either not be mentioned or it will be minimized on the news. The story about insurgents hitting the ammo dump in Camp Falcon disappeared very quickly.

27. Huh? It was an attack on US
I mean, can't expect everyone to remember that we are still the primary target of insurgents over there, what with the media making it out to be "just" inter-ethnic violence...

The attacks are increasing in intesity and duration, the mortar attack on Falcon was a sustained tenty minute barrage. I heard that before the news curtain came crashing down.
I seriously doubt that if you hadn't told us about this we never would have known.

21. Troy was pulled a few months ago from there.
Sent to Baghdad with a few batallions. Troy did a lot of time in Mosul.

It is pronounced - if anyone here doesn't know - mozul. Z sound-not s.

It is a very mixed area - shia, sunni, kurd - pretty evenly divided. And they all hate each other - and they are not too fond of us.

We talked to the kid sunday - he can't call very much. They are working the hell out of those kids down there. We are building a wall around the city of Baghdad. Really.

Most of the guys he went back with this tour are still in Mosul. It is really bad there.

I will pray for your kid - I pray for every one of them.

Joe

Base hit with mortar fire

SEAN COCKERHAM, The News Tribune
Published: October 12th, 2006 03:04 PM
MOSUL, IRAQ __ Fort Lewis soldiers tracked and killed two insurgents who launched a major mortar attack on the base here Thursday.

There were two minor U.S. injuries during the air attack on Forward Operating Base Diamondback, where the airfield and hospital are located. It's across the road from Forward Operating Base Marez, where most of the Fort Lewis troops in Mosul are stationed.

The mortars landed with booming thuds in the late afternoon. More than 15 rounds could be heard smashing into the ground, and 11 were confirmed to have struck the base. There were explosions and plumes of black smoke in the sky.

The Army said the attack damaged one living quarters.

Maybe a little played down in the story (especially if you read the rest at the link)?

You could try this google news search to watch for other reports coming in:
