Motelism

Motelism

The academic world hasn’t realized that America has given birth to a new philosophy during the last to 6 years.

It's called "Motelism". Motelism, in brief, is the view that the Earth, Nature, or Universe (take your pick) is in essence a "motel" for the salvation/damnation sitcoms of a certain highly politicized subgroup of Christianity.

Motelists, however, do not speak for Christianity. Indeed the Christian world has long since made its peace with science and rationality and openly disavows any association with this "new and improved" (according to the Motelists) version of Christianity.

A key tenant of Motelism is the view that the Earth, Nature, or Universe (take your pick) is scheduled to go up in a cloud of Armageddon smoke any day now.

Civilization, or course, has always had doomsdayers since the beginning of recorded history; however, this fast food version of the human condition has particularly dangerous consequences for 3rd millennia Earthlings.

For most us, this planet is not a motel. It's our home. It's where we live and move and have our being. This certainly doesn't mean we can't be spiritual beings with religious inclinations, but it DOES mean the mystery we are born out of and die back into isn't an extended Hollywood set for television evangelists.

Some philosophers argue that Motelism is the ultimate "centrism", beyond both ego centrism and geo centrism, since even quarks and quasars become objects d'art for the brassy antics of motelists.

Another implication of Motelism is that such formerly life and death matters as global warming, the population explosion, environmental pollution, and medical challenge (e.g., embryonic stem cell research) become moot if the Baptist Big Bang is just around the corner. In short, why worry about the future if there isn't any -- as in "What, Me Worry?" perhaps.

It's also been noted that the present corporate rape of Mother Nature correlates precisely with the rise of Motelism. Perhaps this is because Dick Cheney’s ultra secret Energy Task Force is only too happy to exploit the natural environments which Motelists cast off. The moment the Bush/Evangelical Presidency filed for a divorce from Mother Nature, the corporate feeding frenzy began.

Evidently since Motelists are always "just passing through" their philosophy is: Why clean the bathrooms -- and why not steal the towels?

1. Are you talking about the guests of a "not-tell motel"?
...Use the room for a night or a few hours as a way to get a quick piece of ass, then blow without paying the bill?

Great post!

When will we get it? When will we stop punishing the children?

Undeservedly you will atone for the sins of your fathers.
