IOWA CITY, Iowa An Iowa native on the forefront of influenza surveillance says while knowledge of virus transmission has increased since previous pandemics, many challenges remain.

Doctor Nancy Cox, who grew up on a farm near Spencer, is the chief of the influenza division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. snip

She says three previous pandemics, or global epidemics of flu in 1918, 1957 and 1968, struck without warning.

For the first time, our hospital is telling us how to prepare ourselves.
It is gearing up for a pandemic.
There is appearing to be delays (at the very least) and shortages (at the very worst) in flu vaccine.
We have already had our flu shots at work. Next week, it is giving our spouses and older children their shots. They are worried if our families get sick, they could get us sick.
