Is that he stays in the race long enough to make replacing him on the ballot impossible, then gets crushed uner the weight of the Foley scandal, and John Laesch takes the seat, for all purposes, unopposed.

Then, Hastert pulls down several other Repuglickens in a Hidenberg sized disaster.

So far, Hastert is helping that agenda move along quite nicely.

Now, all Bush has to do is damn him with faint praise, what I call leaving a penny tip. That's good enough to enourage Hastert a bit, not bad enough to send him running to the hills.

Today, on NPR, I heard it said that Bush "appreciated" Hastert. Damn.

Do I hear the beginning strains of "Thanks for the memories"?
