Conservative Activists Considering Role of Gay Lawmakers
Conservative activists are beginning to discuss the Mark Foley scandal as indicative of a GOP that has become too tolerant of gays in their midst. Regardless of the party's efforts against gay marriage, the argument goes, the fact that Republican officials accept gay congressmen, such as Foley, and staffers will mean the party will have problems.

No- the problem isn't Mark Foley's orientation but his soliciting of minors...

3. Note to Log Cabin Republicans:
Your time is almost up. What part of "We don't want your kind" do you not understand?

8. Are you sure about that?
Frankly, I'd just as soon NOT have them on my side. These are "I've got mine" Americans who don't give a flying fig for the rights of women, minorities, or the working class. If they jump ship to the Dem side, they will bring their money-grubbing, pro-Iraq, fascist reverence attitude along for the ride.

I'm not a Dem just because the Democratic party includes gays under their tent; I'm a Dem because they include MANY disenfranchised Americans under their tent. My support is based on wide range of issues snd policies, not just the one that benefits me the most.

10. If Log-Cabin Republicans feel disenchanted with the present GOP
...then have them look at what the Dems have to offer. Granted, they may not "give a flying fig for the rights of women, minorities, or the working class" at this point, but, given a party that no longer considers them citizens, they may see Democratic ideals through different eyes. And it could be a long, arduous process.

This is from someone who has spent the last 35 years in a political metamorphosis. I started out a staunch Republican in 1971, quickly switched to Independent in 1972, and joined the Democrat Party in 1992. For me it's been a long journey, but I'm more comfortable now with my world view than I was at age 18. Perhaps the same will hold true for many LC Repubs.

11. Thank you. So much of their propaganda suggests that we are
the "gay" party, or the "black" party, or the "feminist" party, or the "pacifist" party because the other side is comprised of a collection of single-issue voters who are being manipulated by the corporatist financiers.

We are the party that welcomes the disenfranchised, that believes in government of, by and for the people. We believe in the principles embodied in our founding documents, and our only requirement is that we follow those principles. Those who may belong to a group that is generally thought to be part of our coaltion, but who do not believe in those principles can just go somewhere else.

That's why organizations like Log Cabin Republican have to exist - we don't want them. If they are incapable of the human empathy needed to see the social inequites generated by unbridled capitalism, nationalism, and general "me-ism" they can stay where they are.

14. "human empathy" -- exactly!
I don't need to be black or a blue-collar worker or an immigrant to feel that people DESERVE basic human rights and protection in an exploitative capitalist system.

The fact that that I'm gay, and a woman, has helped me recognize our shared vulnerability and our common need for rights and protections. And even if I suddenly received every gay right I'd ever dreamed of, I'd STILL be a Dem to ensure that everyone else got their place in the sun as well.

9. You're right, of course. I notice they're not evening acknowledging that
there are plenty of straight lawmakers who would not think twice of seducing and using pages of the opposite sex.

13. I think we all know what will happen...
if a member of congress is busted doing this same thing with the femals pages. They'll call the girls sluts, dig up any dirt they can find on their sexual history (even make shit up if they have to), and basically blame it all on the girls. They're little gold-digging tramps don'tcha know. *sigh*

15. yep. Another missed opportunity.
The opportunity to talk about the sexualization of our young people at an earlier and earlier age. The chance to talk about what is ethical or moral vs. just what is "illegal" and a chance for some people to take a standa against taking sexual advantage of the young and vulnerable no matter how firm their asses are.
