Iraq is lost, we have no other option but to leave....
the few rational people left in the GOP know this, but the fuckers will wait until after the election to break that news to the American people...meanwhile more people die on a daily basis.

1. Bush won't leave
I don't think.

But I agree we need to be talking about the best and quickest way to leave, not indulging fantasies that we can "win in Iraq".

2. You think they're gonna just leave all that oil behind?
Just asking.

3. How are we going to hold it?
are we going to commit a 200,000 or 300,000 overextended, underequipped troops to the cause?

I see your point, but like I said, I think the rational minds in D.C. realize this is Vietnam times 10, and it's a looming political disaster for the Republican Party.

11. Ah, well you see, I disagree that the rational minds have any say in this
and therefore, the US will stay.

I mean, the US hasn't lost nearly enough troops to completely break the military. Only strain it endlessly.

5. It was about control of oil not possession of oil
Insofar as it was about oil, and I generally believe that aspect of it is overblown here at DU.

We can get out of Iraq and retain control over their oil supplies by ensureing that whoever comes to power is our buddy

8. That's exactly the part that the neocons screwed up...
they have turned the Iraqi people so much against us, that it's going to be nearly impossible to get "our buddy" in there, at least not "peacefully". It seems to me that if that's our goal at some point we're going to have to choose sides in the civil war, have an all out bloodbath and hope for the best.

I just don't see any other options at this point, and I think that's what Warner and other conservatives are seeing too. Politically that could be devastating for them if things go badly, and of course, there's a pretty good chance it will.

4. The troops are bait for the Iranian campaign...
the neocons know they're "dead ducks" in a war with Iran. They will use their slaughter as a "Pearl Harbor" rallying cry for a draft. This is why they're being forced to stay, IMHO.

6. Who do you think is going to win out?
because it seems like the conservatives are making a move to wrest control back from the neocons.

I think that this is an issue that could potentially destroy the GOP if they don't get it figured out quick.

We can only hope that something does. They have done enough to destroy America

7. Even if support dwindles to Pickles and the dog...
Dubya's stayin'. Why to leave would be like admitting he was wrong. Are there any "rational" people left in the Republican Party?

10. Unless the Democrats take control...
Then I predict that the chimp's mental instability will be called into question out in the open. I think the conservatives have figured out that they can work with the Democrats easier than they can the neocons. I wouldn't doubt it if his ratings dwindle to those types of numbers before he's gone.

There are a few "rational" ones left (relatively speaking). Warner is one of them I think.

13. And, per Woodward, he's not so sure about Pickles anymore.
Maybe Barnie will bite him in the nuts, and then we can be done with it.

Actually, the only fix to that is to make certain that everyone understands that the dems must control both houses come November. That's the only way to tie his hands, and just possibly make some changes.

16. Unlike Vietnam, THIS war was lost the day we started it.

Had South Vietnam survived -- and it surprised a lot of people how long it did survive our departure; and could have survived with just minimal assistance -- we would have won that war. To win that war the communists had to establish a communist regime in the south which they did.

On the other hand Iraq could end up a westernized, secular, liberal democracy, and the terrorists would STILL celebrate the day we leave as a victory. Our "fleeing Iraq" would join Somalia, Lebanon and the Crusades as examples of "proof" that we will ultimately surrender to Islam no matter how long it takes. That is what this current idiotic administration fails to realize.
