Pat Buchanan claims NAMBLA marches in gay pride parades
I can't find any ready evidence of this. Has this ever happened?

That's like marching in a "southern pride" parade w/ the KKK.

It's fine to be proud of sweet tea and barbecue and whatever else is good about the south. But you've got to keep the bad apples out if you want to have any credibility.

15. Wait a minute. You seem to be saying that you're gay, and you ACCEPT that
poster's assertion that NAMBLA is a subset of the "group" of gay American?

If I were gay, I'd be going for this throat for even insinuating that pedophiles are part of a gay "group."

Did you actually READ his post?

Gay Pride parade in which NAMBLA had a float. I couldn't believe that was true, but more than one poster seemed to be saying that.

Did I miss the sarcasm (it's been known to happen)?

Just for the record, I'm straight, and I don't accept that NAMBLA is a subset of the gay community.

40. I am straight as well, and do not accept that either. It's a blatant smear
and blame-deflection tactic.

My friend, this is the time for us to rally to the support of our homosexual brethren. The Republicans are trying yet again to equate male homosexuality with pedophilia, and we know that's not true.

As straight guys, you and I may not understand a gay man's attraction to other men on a visceral level, but we must understand on an intellectual level that it's a right in America to be however you want to be...and I suspect you already know that.

Let's keep hammering on this in the forums, you and I. OK? Those rightwing sons of bitches should NOT be allowed to equate homosexualty with pedophelia. They'll be sneaking trolls into DU, and those trolls will try to insinuate that idea oh-so-cleverly; let's catch and expose them as we can.

We owe it to our friends.

the typical con job these wackos manufacture to demonize us. I'm sure Pat Buchanan has attended at least one church where the clergy molested young boys and girls - hell, he probably even shook their hands and embraced their holy message.

This crap coming out of the mouth of a Repuke is unconscionable, especially since that party has the damned Moonies marching into their convention and bankrolling their campaigns and they are beholden to the wackiest coalition of KKK members of con-artist televangelistas this country has ever seen.

And he has the nerve to make assertions about people who march in the Gay Pride parades? Puh-leeze....there is nothing sleazier in this country than a Republican official.

34. Oh, yes, indeed. You are right. You KNOW that old Pat and his pals have
been working for DAYS to come up with that particular sound-bite bullshit.

You know that because he repeated it so many times. Along with the word "flamer."

Look, I'm not gay, but the SECOND he used the word "flamer," I KNEW he was working for the Great Republican Deflection team.

This is utter bullshit, and it offends me. This business of turning Foley's pedophilia into gay-bashing is utterly revolting.

Hey, all you DU guys who like guys rather than liking women, let me be honest with you, and you've heard me say this before: That's not my preference, but I'll defend to the death your right to like what you like...just because it's not what I like, doesn't make it wrong in any way.

Anyone who wants to equate male homosexuality with pedophilia, you send them to me and I'll be only too happy tokick their ass, OK?

21. Nambla used to march in Pride parades but now is banned.
(from Wikpedia) NAMBLA had its beginnings in the 1970s during the height of the Sexual Revolution. It was at first central in the nascent gay political-activism community. The first Gay Pride parades in New York City featured boylove-themed entries. After the Anita Bryant episodes of the 1970s NAMBLA became gradually less accepted by the leadership of the larger gay movement. By 1994, the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the Nambla entry in the NYC Gay Pride parade was met with catcalls and derision by some observers, though not by all: some of the men and teenaged boys who marched that year were greeted with hugs and appreciation by a few of the onlookers. Note that this was the time that the same-gender oriented community became split. Many organizations such as NAMBLA and PROJECT TRUTH were no longer able to use the word " GAY ". Banned from the Pride Days and the community centres as well as the Gay Anarchists and other sympathetic and likewise scorned groups; once so an imprtant part of the early GAY movement.

46. You can't PC this away
The gay movement has a long and tumultous political/activist history in which many sexually taboo groups jostled for legitimacy, and NAMBLA was certainly one of them.

In the context of the 60s and 70s -- when people were challenging all manner of social mores and traditions -- the rise of NAMBLA was not met with universal revulsion from the gay community. You have to understand, our generation was questioning EVERY conventional institution: monogamy, marriage, gender roles, vanilla sex, and yes, even age taboos.

So, I don't remember if NAMBLA was present at the gay pride marches of New York City back when I lived there, but I wouldn't be particularly shocked to find out that it had been. In the fragmented and bickering collective of diverse, if not opposing, activist gay groups, there was little consensus about any issue and NAMBLA had it's supporters as well as its detractors.

Just curious. I'm in my mid-50s, so for me "around awhile" means at least 30 years, back to my 20s and the chaotic activism of the time. Those were pretty wild times....

54. NAMBLA started in the late 60s
As a young gay woman with no children, NAMBLA was an issue as far removed from me as possible, and yet even I had heard of them.

I don't remember being particularly scandalized about the organization at the time, but as I said, this simply wasn't an issue that touched me at a personal level. I was caught up in the political schisms of the lesbian world: separtists vs. non-separatists, monogamy vs. non-monogamy, bdsm vs. vanilla sex, yada yada yada.

My attitude has changed over time, partly a factor of maturity, but also because the sexual pradators issue has escalated as a hot button in society. It's hard to ignore, even though I still don't have children. My appreciation of the vulnerability of children has become more keen through the decades, so I'm firmly against loosening the few controls we have to protect them from adult sexual interest.
