Foley had a problem
He should have sought help, it is pretty much his fault.

BUT...

What did the GOP Leadership do about him BEFORE he was exposed?

3. It isn't about sex, it's about the rule of law and obstruction of justice

4. They Think Of This As A Club...
Congressmen and Senators look at their job like a membership in a country club. With membership comes all sorts of perks and status, and also the ability to look the other way when your buddy screws up.

The desire for power and money among all the Repugnicans involved here is the glue that held this conspiracy together. Talking Points reminds us that during the time that Alexander's office got the complaint and passed it on to Reynolds, Tom DeLay was still in charge...and one thing "The Hammer" was reknown for was knowing lots of little details about House members.

It was DeLay who had to approve putting Foley on that Child porn subcomittee...and I tend to think it was to nulify and inoculate him from the long circulating charges that he was gay. Foley had dug himself too deep both in the political and money structure of the party...so, like a Mehlman...they tolerated his secret life.

We're already seeing the quid pro quo between Foley and Reynolds...who runs the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee. The $100gs appear not to be as much a pay-off to Reynolds as it is to DeLay and the party hierarchy for keeping quiet about this inquiry. As we say..."the fix was in".

Also...remember, there was no ethic committee for most of 2005. DeLay gutted it when he put Hastings in charge and sacked Heffley...it wasn't until the first wave of Abramoff sleeze oozed out that the committee even met..and you can see what good they've done on the DeLay and Nay investigations <coughbullshitcough>

Nancy Pelosi should push for an emergency session of the ethics committee...in OPEN session and on live TV and drag in all the players in this scandal and have them testify under oath....and, of course, this includes the Mr. Foley.
