March, 2007: The Democratic-controlled Congress repeals the detainee act
Handshakes all around as Russ Feingold congratulates the other Democratic senators and the couple of Republicans who worked hard to undo this terrible bill. House Majority leader Nancy Pelosi tells reporters, "This nation can breath a sigh of relief, knowing that we will both hunt down and kill and capture the terrorists who wish to harm us, and our citizens will not have their fundamental rights taken away. It took us a few months after the act was signed back in late September to get all this done, but fortunately, the American people placed their trust in us in the November elections. We will continue working hard for the American people and after..."

Wait. Stop. Hold on.

That didn't happen. Apparently, a few easily-discouraged DUers of dubious character either got apathetic or convinced others to be, and the Republicans ended up keeping the majority in Congress. Oh, well...

3. Repealing laws and acts usually takes at least a month to gather votes
garner support, etc.

4. Please don't be impatient
with those who feel let down today. Let others express themselves here with the people they have been in the trenches with. I feel totally deflated today but I know that tomorrow I will have to suck it up and get on with it. Don't take it personally. Peace, Kim

5. I feel the same way, Kim.
People are grieving for this loss, as we all are, but have different ways of expressing it.
I think everyone should cut everyone some slack now, and carry on tomorrow.

7. .....and Stupid vetoes it
The law stands.

Face it, Stupid will veto every single thing a Democratic Congress passes, except for "emergency funds" for his precious WAR.

14. You need a two-thirds majority to override a veto
That's a damn tall order you're wanting.

10. 12 Democrats in the Senate voted for it, we will not repeal it without a
60+ majority

or move some Dems in and some out

15. Also, the Repugs will have more than 40 in the Senate (plus 12 or more
Quisling Dems to vote with them) and would filibuster it to death.

And the torturers get away with it.
