The failed federal marriage amendment, waffling on stem cell research, no new limits on abortion - Means sees little but broken promises from the Republican Congress. And she's far from alone among like-minded people whom many credited in 2004 with helping pass same-sex marriage bans in 11 states and being key to President Bush's re-election.


"There are a lot of people that are somewhat disillusioned and have a feeling of betrayal for having worked so hard and have Republicans be so unresponsive," Dr. James Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family, said after speaking at a rally here this week. "How that will play out, I really don't know."


Such discouragement is just one of several obstacles facing Republicans in mobilizing Christian conservatives this year.

8. Well, clearly it's because we haven't "courted" all 12 of them enough.

Obviously, according to certain DLC and "conventional wisdom" nabobs, working overtime to convince the "heartland" that we hate gays, reproductive choice, and the separation of church and state as much as they do is the ONLY way to win.

Never mind the fact that the segment of the Republican Party and Independent Electorate that is REALLY in play this time is Libertarian-Minded voters, people who are waiting for a party to take a stand against the Iraq war AND the Drug war, people who are waiting for a party to come out clearly and unapologetically for the rights of citizens to control their own bodies and personal decisions, from reproductive to end-of-life. They want a party that DEMANDS respect for and public placement -in city halls, courthouses, etc.- of a very important decalogue... not the Ten Commandments, but The Bill of Rights.

Hell, using the $$$ ("fiscal responsibility", remember?) saved by ending the $40 Billion-a-year drug war, legalizing and taxing marijuana, and cutting the half a trillion in yearly Military/Industrial outlays down to something sane, we might be able to afford things like a SPHC system; which would win us Green voters and even one or two of these "heartland values voters", if they ever decide that their family having health coverage is more important than making sure the gays down the street don't get married.

Sure, going that direction might make more sense; hell, it might even irretrievably crack the GOP in half and catapult US into long-term majority party status. But where's the fun in that?

11. Here's a twist

My crazy, unemployed, meth head ex-neighbor was discussing the fate of the world with his not-too bright, fundy and rather sad momma. Sonny boy has never had a real job in his life and the man is 35 years old. Sad momma told me once that each one of her kids had spent time in jail. Just the same, the both of them are super religious and just positive that they have the market cornered on heaven.

Anyways, I'm listening to sonny boy discussing the fate of the world with sad momma. Really, it was more like he was yelling and she was nodding her head. The point being is that sonny boy tells her:

"That George Bush is the Anti-Christ! He acts all religious but if you shave his head, you're gonna find a 666 tattoo. Mark my words!"
