Before all you "free speech" ideologues attack this thread I ask you to,...

SHUT THE FUCK UP LONG ENOUGH TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND LOOK, REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT IS BEING FED 24/7 TO THE AMERICAN,...children.

Does "innocence' enter your mind, at all? What about "objective" or "selective" or "what is" or "what can be",...and stuff like that?

Isn't it frightening TO YOU that, 85% of what's delivered to the public, to your children is,....criminals (which represent less than 15% of our society serving *LOL* in over-crowded prisons thirsting for the real criminals against society to be caged and THAT will be preserved for another discussion) and danger and fear and pacification. I freakin' HATE "teevee" because it mostly fails to deliver reality, all for "the money": money rules, ethics and wisdom and Love and hope drues,...the mantra of corporate americorps.

Yes, I know,..."free speech". What about YOUR fucking responsibility associated with that freedom? Do you give a damn about how YOUR words and actions affect others? If so, how? What do YOU contribute to the best interests of anyone other than YOU? What would YOU want someone to contribute to you and your life?

1. One choice is to turn it off entirely
I pretty much agree that the box has stuff on it that is unacceptable. I don't watch it anymore. I also find it ironic that Fox whose news is watched by the RW is one of the worst offenders.

3. Coming out swinging
I agree about television and children, but coming out swinging in an original post might not be effective.

As a veteran teacher, I see first hand the negative effects of unmoderated television viewing. But if I were to stand up and tell the parents of my students "If you really care about your kids, you'd shut down their television," well, I'd lose the trust of a lot of parents.

"What's he getting at?" they'd think. "Is that Liberal telling us we don't care about our kids?"

I host No TV Week each year for my class. It works better and I get a chance to explain to students and parents why we need to watch what we watch. I don't impress everybody, but I do affect my students and maybe three or five sets of parents. That ain't much, but imagine if every teacher did that.

6. "Turn it OFF" was my campaign.
Thing is,...if you are realistic,...the damn corpobrainwarp IS A PIECE OF OUR CULTURE, NOW. Commercials suck people into a myth. Those commercials possess "the box" and what is shown.

I suppose advocating "quitting" the teevee, altogether is a possibility to pursue.

:rofl:

How to reign in terrorism of the minds on, not only our kids, but also the American people,...is something for someone else to figure 'cause "turn it off" hasn't worked, yet.

4. why don't you use parental controls?
And also, over 85% (hell, close to 100%) of MY tv (and i don't even have kids) is history, nature, documentary, BBC, or movies that _I_ chose (dvd's).

There's plenty of bullshit out there, but there's plenty of good too. Cable (forget which channel) has been running an excellent series on the Revolutionary War. Just today (a long rainy day) watched Syriana (dvd), a doc about Saturn and Titan, The Simpsons, a part of Ulees Gold (an under-rated performance by Peter Fonda IMHO) and even a part of Casa Blanca (gotta love Bogie). Yesterday BBC News covered global warming, Israel/Palestine, etc.

Don't expect MY TV to be dumbed down to a 5 yr old's level, and I won't bitch about the CHOICES YOU make on YOUR tv.

7. I assume you have enough money to have that power.
Right?

What about the rest of us (prolly lots more than you imagine) who have no money to do the "parental control" mechanisms at your disposal? You surely do not believe we ALL have such 'control' at our disposal, do you?

:shrug:

8. Well, I DO assume you have the power to...
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 09:42 PM by ret5hd
throw the box out the window! If it's doing so much damage to your family, i would suggest you have the responsibility, nay, THE DUTY to throw it out!

On edit: As we speak, history channel is showing the Revolutionar War doc i was referring to, the travel channel is showing "Anthony Bourdain in Beirut" (the world famous NY chef gets caught in the opening days of the bombing of beirut while filming a doc on beirut's restaurants...very very interesting)

9. Amazing how people will turn to ANYTHING other than their own,....
,...lives. The grubbers see that and bilk to desert sand off it.

The real point, though, is,...doesn't viewer-ship tag a "reality-mark" on the State of this nation?

~~~BREAK~~~~
Drive the dream,...up to and down from all cliffs,...a Lexis Extreme"
Typing on a keyboard, hearing crickets, smelling my dogs *LOL*, listing the things I gotta' do tomorrow, drives an OLD car, wakes up to a bzillion birds chirping and singing (but, then, I am so manipulative as to build a "birdie commune" with a gigantic feeder and lotsa' bird houses),...and holding NO respect for anyone who can't gain my respect by being true to their word.
Yada.
11. it's so frustrating...
through that box we are being lied to, manipulated, targeted and marketed. It is an addiction. What was recreation has taken center stage, and is omni-present. The commercials alone...totally piss me off...while my sister takes it all in, and isn't even aware of it. Like if she doesn't pay attention it isn't there. And then, she wonders why she bought that "Swifter" dust thingy.
12. Turn off your TV. If you let your kids watch it, watch what they're
watching, make sure it meets your standards. Talk to your children Kids are smart, they know the difference between TV-fantasy and real life, believe it or not. Real life, for the most part, is kind of boring - not really "entertainment" material. Kill your TV! The TV causes a huge increase in alpha waves, in children especially, people in alpha don't think much, it causes mindlessness - kinda like prolonged meditation.
FWIW money rules, ethics and wisdom and Love and hope drues - I hate to break it to you, but TV did not make it this way. We as human beings allowed ourselves to be sucked into this. It's good programming, and it's taken many, perhaps tens, of generations. It keeps us from recognizing how owned we are by the ruling classes.
Teach your kids what's really important, give them your own set of rules and drools, teach by example, and hope for the best. Try not to get so stressed out :)
