homogeny. Two important greek roots everyone should know.

homo- same, gen - origin, creation.

So everybody having the same origin. If the United States were truly a "melting pot," everybody born here would be from the same homogeny. We'd all share the same cultural bath house.

More commonly seen as "homogenized." Milk is homogenized so all the curds and whey and what not are all mixed up. So when you're drink it you're getting all the stuff from the same source.

Hegemony- a larger state taking control of other states. Often for imperialistic purposes. I suppose Russia would have had a hegemony over its various republics. Or arguably the U.S. over NATO. I've often seen it used for more third-world type depotisms. The Taliban was a hegemon to various Afghani tribes and warlords.

2. leadership; predominance.
3. (esp. among smaller nations) aggression or expansionism by large nations in an effort to achieve world domination.

10. Johnson County Kansas.
Thomas Frank's book What's the Matter with Kansas is spot on. Frank coined the term "Cupcake Land" in describing Johnson County, Kansas City's biggest most affluent suburb.
