On Nov 16, 2006, the soap opera General Hospital will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the marriage of Luke and Laura, an event that was watched by ca 30 million people.

The fascination with the couple was so great that even Elizabeth Taylor asked to play a cameo role. She and the actor playing Luke appeared on the cover of People magazine.

Some may think that November is important because of the 2006 election; others know that that its real importance lies in the commemoration of the Luke and Laura story, a story that will live forever. ( :sarcasm: )

1. yep, I remember it, my then 13 year old future sister in law mimicked
Bobbie in the series as she faked a pregnancy and passed a pregnancy test by taking in a sample of her friend's pregnant pee. The script worked in real life and the 13 year old was married just a month shy of her 14th birthday and never had a kid until 2 years later.

Which makes me go :wtf: to this "celebration" even more.

I didn't watch it. But my sister did. And I found out about the rape years later, which made me go :wtf: at the time.

One more time: :wtf:

10. yes, and Laura had murdered someone I think ..... but ...... remember
Luke and Laura on the run from the crime boss (the actor playing the crime boss also played some doofus in one of the Police Academy movies who got a BJ during some serious meeting) and the attempt of the Cassadines to freeze the world

....and all the story lines about Scopio and Holly (that actress then had some major role in the Denver prime time soap) and Felicia and the singer, etc, etc.......

****

There's a sanity/serenity check list that awards points for each birth and death in the family, each marriage and divorce, each new job and job loss, etc. The more points you have the more precarious your emotional/psychological situation is. By that measure, every character in any soap opera is within the space of a year or less a prime candidate for a nice long 'rest' in some quiet asylum.

8. That was almost as big as "Who shot JR?" or "I am your father!"
It's hard to get that type of cultural phenom out of entertainment these days. So much more diversity of medium, and diversity of audience.

9. Nothing says "love in the afternoon" like marrying your rapist.
