Young Turks sells out to Air America

They will be taking over the morning slot. The person who runs RadioPower.org is PISSSSSSSSSSSSSED.

"I just got this lovely notice:

You just made a deal with the devil.

I hope you enjoy the the ride.

Shelby,

Strike another blow for independence, and another victory for the
corporate world.

The Young Turks have signed a deal with Air America Radio to be the
morning show, starting on Sept 18th.

We can start to realize what this means for our presence on Radiopower.
We will no longer be on Sirius, so that feed you've been using goes away.
Plus, Air America will have the rights to our audio, and I don't believe
we will be allowed to remain on Radiopower. I don't know if you have any
more insight into this process than I do, maybe from dealings with Thom
Hartmann.

So as you already know, this week we are on vacation and there are no
shows, and next week we are property of Air America. I will be out of the
office until Thursday, but at the end of this week I'd like to email you
with some more definitive comments than this email contains.

If indeed our run on Radiopower comes to an end, I have to send you a
giant thank you for having us on all these years, and for the great
support and exposure Radiopower has gotten us. It's been a HUGE part of
our listenership and growth.

I'll be in touch.

David

This is how the Turks "thank" RadioPower?????

Thom Hartmann, is in the process of doing the same thing.

We have lost every program we help build to AAR and "exclusive" rights.

I'm so god damn pissed off right now I can barely type.

--------

The good news is; Mike Malloy now seems destine for Sirius Left 6pm-9pm ET?

Mike, so help me, you better force Sirius to allow RadioPower to co-stream.

Or I will have lost ALL faith in the Liberal American way.

1. I'm a lowly listener and I am very pissed.
We're just about ready to leave on a long trip(s) moving to Texas.....Sirius is our life's blood on those trips from northern MN. God, does this mean I have to listen to all thaaaaaat RW crap and evangelic radio? Wait until I tell my husband!!! But, I'm very sorry for you. Hope something works out for you.

2. Good news for Mike if that is true. I just have to shutdown XM and
renew Sirius.

I guess we'll find out next week what AAR is doing. If Young Turks are going to be on the morning show, does that mean 6-9 or 9-12. Majority Report is supposed to be 9-12 instead of Springer.

3. They sucked anyway.
I heard them the few times they subbed for Mike and they were just horrible.

RadioPower should check out some of these liberal podcasts cause some of these guys are really, really good.

4. Selling out? or spreading the word...
they're on 5 OTA stations now... they will be on 50-70 after this.

they've got a 3.5'ish million (potential) listing base on Sirius, 7.2 million on XM

this should give them at leat 10-15 times the potential 'ears' to hear some truth against the reich-wing.

How is this a 'sellout'???

(and they will be on before Sam, not instead of)

While their producer's "Dear John" letter is a bit crass, I don't fault the Turks for signing with AAR. Are they making money being webcast by Radiopower? I highly doubt it. Does Radiopower have any kind of infrastructure to syndicate to radio stations across the country? Don't think so. The Young Turks only have a few affiliates, and they did their own syndication, signed a separate deal with Sirius and allowed Radiopower to stream them. Now AAR thinks they've got what it takes to bring it to the next level, and while TYT are still a bit raw, they are much better than they were a few years ago. With some tweaking, I think they could be good.

Some people don't realize that radio is a brutal way to make a living, and radio personalities work their asses off to be successful. Why shouldn't they accept a good opportunity? Isn't that what most people aspire to?

This is not a put-down of Radiopower, but let's be real - I doubt anyone considers them to be a full-bore competitor to the big boys like AAR. I think it would be much better to act as a farm league team helping to develop the stars of tomorrow, instead of just streaming the same shows that are streamed everywhere else. The now-defunct Democracy Radio is an example of a group with the intent of bringing up new talent, with Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller and others, though they acted more as agents.

Conservative talk radio has long had a 'farm system' for up-and-coming talent. There are local wingnut shows in virtually every market, where Rush Fatboy wannabes ply their wares. And quite a few (too many for my tastes) have moved on to bigger markets and greater opportunities such as syndication. Liberal talk has very few of these same opportunities. If Shelby really cares about furthering liberal talk, he should make it a goal to breed the stars of tomorrow, so that the Air Americas and the Sirius' of the world pick them up. The next Mike Malloy is probably out there putting out podcasts that 30 or 40 people listen to. How about bringing people like this up to the next level, instead of offering the same Thom Hartmann stream that ten other sources are offering. Save the bandwidth.

Head-On Radio gets it, and I think they have put together a pretty impressive webcasting station with their own unique personalities. Radiopower should do the same.

5. How sad for us all.. This whole musical chairs routine is getting old
Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 03:28 PM by SoCalDem
especially when , for most of us, it's just costing us more money..

The right wingers don;t have this "problem", now do they? A guy leaves one station, and poof! he's on another, and all they have to do is change a radio pre-set.. no money changes hands..no interminable time spent on hold with a phone robot telling us to press 1 and press 3..

Lefties are being played..royally ...

7. How is it ridiculous?
I've spent at least $400 so far following Mike Malloy and Randi around the satellite radio merry-go-round.

8. so now if Malloy goes to Sirius, you 're gonna forget Randi?
You need to be aware of deals... altho I favor XM, wherever Mike ends up I'll dig up some cheap deals for either XM or Sirius if possible. A few months back I posted some XM deals for < $20 for a receiver, some for Free after a rebate.

and the 'ridiculous' part is the 'Lefties are being played..' part... yeah, right, they are switching services to get a wider listenership and that's "getting played"... please....

9. Randi's on my local semi-AAR station
Although she's delayed for 2 hours and the last hour is cut. That's just not going to do it for me.

I guess I'll have to get Sirius and XM. Unfortunately my old Sirius receiver is a big honkin' first generation model with a broken antenna, and replacement antennas cost almost as much as the entire receiver.

I think the original point is that the RW can get their Limbaugh fix just by turning on the radio, his crapfest is everywhere, and always free. We have to chase our favorite hosts and pay for it or stream them. It's really annoying.

10. I won't disagree on the 'annoying' part...
.. but I don't think it's deliberate on the talent's part.

If it comes time to re-activate your Sirius, I'll find you a good deal. Same for XM (right now, the best honking deal I can find for XM is $50 for a Jensen JXR9 (radio, car kit, home kit, no rebate needed). As christmas approaches, we'll have the Friends & Family deal again for some even better prices. Best I see right now for Sirius is the Starmate package for $130
