I Love Malloy But You Can't Advocate Violence On The Radio!
when i was listening to mike filling in for randi on monday, i remember hearing him say something that made me say--out loud: "shit! you're not suppose to say that."

so i went back and listened, and typed up a piece of his show. this is my guess why he was fired--because you can't advocate violence (or killing someone--even if you're being sarcastic--i think it is a major no-no)

Malloys show as he was filling in for Randi Monday August 28 2006
(in the fourth hour)(around 3:25 downloaded onto real player from www.whtierosesociety.org )

Mike: Ray is calling from New Jersey. Welcome to the program. Thanks for holding on.

Ray: Hi Michael.

Mike: Hey.

Ray: You were asking for a conservative or a bush supporter to call so I just thought Id call.

Mike: Well, thanks. Have a great day. What are you calling about?

Ray: Well, I support the president and Im thankful theres a conservative in the white house during these times when terrorists want to kill us because were not Muslim.

Mike: Wow. Is that why they hate us? Because were not Muslims?

Ray: Well, those two guys, they had guns held to their, the two reporters, the cameramen? They had guns held to their heads. Were sworn to change their religion to be set free or they would have been killed. Is that what were up against here?

Mike: I guess so. Its a terrible world. Thank god George Bush is in power to stop that sort of thing from happening. Right?

Ray: Dont you think we should get them before they get us?

Mike: Oh yeah, that makes sense. Lets go killIll tell you what. Where do you live? You live in New Jersey, Ray?

Ray: Yeah, I live in..

Mike: Are there any Muslims in New Jersey?

Ray: Im sure that there are.

Mike: Okay, why dont you find some and kill them?

Ray: Im in the northeast area in New Jersey.

Mike: Frankly I dont care where you live in New Jersey. Im just saying, next time you see a Muslim why not blow, why not kill him?

Ray: ha. Why is the liberal thing

Mike: Ray, Ray, Ray, I have a question for you. Answer the question or Im gonna leap through the phone and rip your ears off. Heres the question, Ray. Why not go kill a Muslim? Dont leave it up to the soldiers, dont leave it up to the middle east. Youve got Muslims in New Jersey. Why not go kill some?

Ray: Cause some liberal attorney will lock me up.

Mike: No, no no, Ray, answer the question. Are you going to do one of these cowardly republican right-wing things on me. Let me ask you something, since you cant answer that questionshut up!

(and the conversation goes on for a few more seconds before Mike hangs up on him)

anyway--i just remembered this and i'm guessing if mike was really fired this could be the reason.

7. So if somebody came up to me...
and said "I support the war in Iraq." And I said, "if you support the war in Iraq, why don't you go fight in it?"

Then I'd be the one advocating violence?

Quit pulling my leg.

Fighting the war in Iraq
and talking about killing people in New Jersey are two totall different things.

Malloy sounds like a raving lunatic in that transcript. Not to mention talking about "ripping your ears off" to a caller. Not cool.

59. I don't listen to "talk radio"...
whether it's left or right, but the transcript definitely makes Malloy look like a nitwit bully. In fact, if this is typical of Malloy (and I have no idea whether it is or isn't), I'd say he's no better than Limbaugh.

80. Have you never listened to those bastards?
How many instances of the Reich Wing Media's exhortations does it take to eliminate their voices? Savage? Coulter? Hannnity? Limbaugh? Those people have openly advocated, on the air, in print, in one way or another, killing people or excusing their deaths by willful neglect.

Malloy was challenging the caller with a rhetorical question, with the reality of the position the caller expressed. He was trying to get the caller to think about the possible ramifications of his opinion. Malloy incited nothing but coherent thought. Who knows if it took.

By the way, I've been screaming my "ever loving Liberal head off" for a very long time.

The real question is "why don't you do it?" and he was hoping this Ray guy would admit that violence ISN'T the answer, that doing that would be counter-productive. If he had said something like "I think you ought to go and ... " THAT would have been advocating violence.

yo-yo how ridiculous his premise was. If he wants to kill Muslims so badly, why go to the ME if he can do it in New Jersey? I guess the nervous Nellies got all in a tightened wad of something about that. "Shocking! Did he really mean it?" Of course he didn't. But it sure shows how we don't have much freedom of speech anymore if we can't illustrate our speech with a few examples of irony.

Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 06:02 PM by Cleita
She just makes outrageous statements. She doesn't try to use sarcasm, irony, wit or metaphors to illustrate her outrageous statements. She just makes a stupid and outrageous statement, like "liberals are baby murderers" and let's it stand alone. There's no irony there or in anything she says just out and out hostility and hate.

16. I agree you can't. And you shouldn't. But the right wing does it all the
time.

And not in a facetious way, like this obviously was. You can't get through a single Ann Coulter rant without her fantasizing about beating liberals with baseball bats or openly advocating the assasination of Supreme Court Justices she doesn't agree with. Then you have that imbecile- I forget his name- who talked on the air about how he wanted to kill Michael Moore.

They do it all the time- and the funny thing is, the FBI never seems to investigate them or even have a "chat" with them about it. They rarely, if ever, seem to get fired for it. (When it's a right winger, everybody's in on the "joke", apparently.) Media Matters has documented countless examples of this kind of thing.

37. IIRC,
someone was arguing that one "good" argument for abortion was that it would reduce the stress on social services and social security. Bennett (asshat though he is) was basically using the same technique as seen here. His argument was that since there is a disproportionate percentage number of african-americans in jail, that if you aborted all the "black babies" it would reduce the future prison population. I don't think he was advocating it, just attempting to use this ridiculous suggestion to illustrate the absurdity of the callers argument.

I feel dirty now for defending him, I think I'll need to take a shower.

70. Not exactly. I think that the fake christian, gambling addicted blowhard
actually said something more along the lines of :' if you really wanted to reduce the crime rate...blather...if you really wanted to reduce the crime rate then you should abort all of the black babies'.

I think that part of the blather was that he didn't necessarily advocate this. Same difference in my book, though.

Not to mention the spewings of Annthrax, G. Gordon (headshots) Liddy and so many others. Senators from SC making overt threatening remarks about a sitting president, Bill Clinton at the time, and somehow it's all just peachy?

I say screw that! I don't like the tone of the discourse in this country, but when I repukes say crap like 'no more name calling', or 'play nice' after all of the fucking shit they've said and pulled and spewed! I'm just getting started!

Swamp Rat said it best when he brought up the saying about anything after 'but' is bullshit. www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=sh...

The "let's make nice" damage control team has been desperately trying (and failing) to justify Malloy's firing ever since the news was announced yesterday. Shame on them!!

36. I don't think so. He is taking the guys argument to the extreme to show
how ridiculous it sounds. He's done that on his regular show.

If it was anything he said, then it was about Israel or 9/11. You really have to have freedom of speech for those two topics. He's also put * Crime Family in the mainstream. Other free speech issues are the way he mocks the president.

I like Mike and have written, signed, and done everything I can to indicate how much he would be missed.

Then maybe he would still have a job. :sarcasm:

Yeah, pretty stupid thing to say I agree. I've heard Mike say a lot of things I don't agree with. However, he says a lot that I DO agree with. I guess firing a Liberal is okay, his party ain't in power so it is a-okay. :eyes:

One minute you're making the big bucks, the next you're looking through the trash can for food. I've e-mailed and complained, but doubt anything we say or do will determine if AAR hires him back.

I know we all try to find significance where we can to explain events, but since it was so utterly obvious that he was trying to trap the Freeper bigot within his own hatred, this would only be reason for an appology. It may have hastened his exit when asked about it, but decisions like this are usually made long before they are enacted.

55. in all honesty I think...
Malloy's frequent use of the JC curse (taking the lord's name in vain) might have had the most to do with him getting canned. I assume he never did that on Randi's show, with alot more listeners, but alot of people are'nt going to want to hear that. Particularly the middle-of-the-road types who could maybe be enticed to vote Dem. Though Malloy was probably preaching to the choir more than anything on his late night show. It was entertaining...

And yea, Malloy was using some rich irony against that caller.

58. If there were a sarcasm thingy on the radio, Mike would have used it
:sarcasm:

Mike was clearly NOT advocating the killing of Muslims but mocking Ray's "Don't you think we should get them before they get us?" comment.

Glenn Beck, on the other hand, was NOT being sarcastic when he threatened Michael Moore on-air:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200505180008

From the May 17 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus -- band -- Do, and I've lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, "Yeah, I'd kill Michael Moore," and then I'd see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I'd realize, "Oh, you wouldn't kill Michael Moore. Or at least you wouldn't choke him to death." And you know, well, I'm not sure.

And for this, Beck not only was not fired but managed to land a TV gig with Headline News!! :wtf:

of course he didn't mean it--of course he wasn't speaking literally--he's probably one of the most nonviolent voices we have. (he's loud, but he's total "peacenik").

it's just that, from my little understanding of what can & can't be said on air, i think that might have been a no-no.

82. alyce--it was just a theory/an idea
i'm trying to find a reason why this happened to mike.

let's say you own a radio station and you want to fire someone who works for you because they are controversial. do you fire them and say that is why you are firing them? or do you wait for something to happen that will back you up? do you wait for them to cross a line? do you jump all over it when they cross the line a little bit?

you know, why did it happen so quick? he was scheduled to fill in all week for randi and after two days, before the third show air america does this. why? why all of a sudden? what happened all of a sudden to provoke this? what the hell happened at the last minute to get their feathers so ruffled?

even the ny daily had mike listed in the line-up today:
"Air America picks up with Jerry Springer, 9 a.m.-noon; Al Franken, noon-3 p.m.; Randi Rhodes, 3-7 p.m.; Sam Seder, 7-10 p.m., and Mike Malloy, 10 p.m.-midnight. "
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/story/448038p-...

and it is my understanding that you can not tell someone to go kill another person on the airwaves. ok, so mike didn't tell someone, he asked them why don't they. repeatedly. and someone from aar may have jumped all over that one.

of course mike wasn't serious. i know he was trying to make a point. i know he is a nonviolent person. i know. i know. i know.

maybe i'm all wrong about this. maybe it was all about the money.

90. I am so sick and tired of the comments.........
comparing Mike to people like Savage and Limbaugh. There are distinct differences. Number one being that Mike doesn't lie. And if he misstates a fact he admits it and lets everyone know he made an error. He is knowledgeable about history and its relationship with what is going on today. Secondly, his ranting is against the lying, deceit and racism promoted by his counterparts on the radio. There is a big difference between someone ranting and raving while lying and being racist, and those who are ranting and raving (like Mike) against those who are promoting this crap.

If something terrible were to happen it would be irreversible. Dead people are not amusing. In my opinoin what he did could be dangerous. It is also possible AAR did not want to draw attention to this in the press when they fired him. It's also very possible he was fired for other reasons.

Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 06:12 PM by pat_k
Challenging someone by taking their statements to the logical extreme is a time honored means of debate.

The logical extreme of "get them before they get us" is to go after and "preempt" the action of anyone you are afraid might do something bad someday . . . i.e., for many cowardly fascists, that means preempting the action of the Muslim neighbors they view with suspicion.

As Ray demonstrates, the only thing stopping him is his cowardice -- fear that "some liberal attorney will lock me up."

Mike exposes the frightening reality we face -- the mental illness that afflicts Bush loyalists.
