Will John McCain be too old to run for president in 08?
McCain's age could affect expected presidential run
By Steven Thomma
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain of Arizona will do something next week that'll set him apart from everyone else who's weighing a run for president in 2008.

He'll celebrate his 70th birthday Tuesday.

That would put him in uncharted political territory should he win the presidency: No one older than 70 has ever moved into the White House.

Not only will the Republican senator be the oldest of the large field of possible candidates in both major parties, he'll be three years older on Election Day 2008 than Ronald Reagan was when he won his first term in 1980. At 69, Reagan was the oldest man ever to enter the White House. He was 73 when he won his second term.

Whether this changes the presidential campaign probably will depend on whether McCain appears healthy and vigorous - and thus up to the unique demands of the job - or not.

5. Impossible
There is no way one can be too much of an asshole to run for president.

4. He's too old now. In fact, he's too old for anything. Retire him.
Time to go out to pasture, John. Thanks for your service to your country. You were once a very brave man. Now, you're just a chicken-shit opportunist, and America has way too many of them as it is.

7. What exactly is his health status?
I swear that tumor he had removed from one side of his face has grown back once or twice... Maybe it is just me... Is he 100% cancer free??

9. It's migrated to his brain, based upon some of his recent behavior.

10. I don't think we can bank on that
Reagan elected at 69, re-elected at 73. Eisenhower was 70 when he left office. I don't think people are too concerned about age anymore becuz more of us are living longer. I don't think that will be the issue.

11. Age should not be a disqualifying factor for leadership.
McCain isn't too old for the presidency.

He's too Bush-compromised, though. I think Chuck Hagel will upend him in the Republican Iowa caucuses, effectively knocking him out of the race.

12. It's funny that McCain is about as well liked on DU as he is
in Freeperville. I believe that a lot of independents and moderates really like him (although I don't consider him to be either) and that they won't consider his age to be a problem. Remember that a lot of seniors vote and they probably don't care that he is old (and may even see it as a plus).

16. Seniors DO care that he is old because they know what problems can
fall upon the eldery. Someone who is 30 years old doesn't know what it's like to be 72.

14. His age shouldn't disqualify him
His politics should, however.

I mean, if a top Dem that was around 70 were to run, I would certainly back him or her.

He's missed his best opportunity in 2000, dirty tricked out to be sure, but, his 15 minutes are over it's time to go home.
