Govt to prepare kids for terror, disasters
:grr:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1152AP_Ready_Kids.html

After more than a year of delays, the Department of Homeland Security says it plans to launch a preparedness program next month aimed at alerting and preparing children for terror attacks and natural disasters.

The program, called Ready Kids, is scheduled to roll out with TV ads, school programs and other events.

"Ready Kids is a tool for parents and teachers to use to be able to speak to their students and children about how to be prepared for any type of disaster," said DHS spokeswoman Joanna Gonzalez.

When I turned on the Headlines News and heard "preparing kids for terror" I found myself getting extremely pissed off. This is as ridiculous as telling children of past generations to tuck under their desk...you know, just in case the Communists decide to hit us with a NUCLEAR BOMB! How %$*&@ ridiculous is this?

As for preparing a child for natural disasters, don't we already do that? If not, what are fire drills, hurricane drills and tornado drills for? Don't tell me Homeland Security gives a rats ass about talking to kids about a hurricane. I'm not buying that bullshit. They barely talk to actual victims of natural disasters so I have a hard time believing they really care if my kid is a potential victim of such things.

Growing up is scary enough without my government trying to put more fear in my kid that some nut from the other side of the world will bomb her...something that, if it DID happen, what could she do to "prepare" herself? Tuck under her desk? Ridiculous.

The Cold War is back, but this time it's the govt. against us-- inside our own borders.

Fear, itself.

I know, it's not funny. I find this extremely disturbing. Stay the fuck out of my life and my kids' life... if I had any.

I'm sure it will insidiously point the finger at Muslims, too.

You just know that the information will be filled with references to how W has kept us all safe since 9/11 and probably claiming Iraq was responsible for 9/11,etc.

Wrap yourself up in duct tape
Don't breathe the air.

6. I responded on another thread
that I didn't have too much problem with the concept but I do have ONE big question.

As a public school teacher, I want to know if this curriculum is to be delivered in the classrooms, and who is going to mandate it, and where will we find the time to do it because we are teaching to the freaking test already!

I am not kidding! And as a 6 or 7 year old I had no idea what had already been done in Hiroshima. Our grandchildren have seen BOMBS and Shock and Awe and HOLY HELL from the idiot box.

9. Ours alread do earthquake drills and fire drills.
I don't understand what they will be doing otherwise except wasting money, unless this will mandate emergency preparedness but I thought that was already the case. Does this mean they'll talk to kids in non-earthquake areas about earthquakes, and non-hurricane areas about hurricanes, etc? Seems like a waste of money in a "feel good" thing.

15. We do tornado drills
and lockdown drills and also of course fire drills.

What's a kid really got to do with a hurricane except maybe bug his parents to put together a hurricane survival kit before it happens. Which they should do.

parents when they said nasty things against the government? That was my first thought. I just don't trust out government. I wonder why.

18. Will they be using the 'Weekly Reader' again?
Like they used it on the last election to scare kids that only President Bush could keep them safe and please Mommy/Daddy vote for Bush! Now it is elect or re-elect the Republicans, only they can keep you safe.

Very interesting timing of events we have lately.....just like in '04.
