I came across a photo of my grandmother sitting against a Harley circa 1917. She was wearing a bathing suit (of the era). I contacted Harley to find out what year and model of Harley it was and they were super helpful, putting me in contact with one of their internal 'historians' who knew damned near everything about every year of Harley ever made. They were gracious, friendly, and informative.

While 1200cc is too big a bike for me (I rode a Honda rice burner) and the kind of riding I've done and would do, I think they've done decent job of engineering improvements on the more recent Sportsters.

These are more Junior's style...

Full disclosure: I'm no great fan of Harley's in general-I'd have been much more impressed if you still had to kick start one of the things. I'd be more impressed with Harleys in general if one of their models contested in the Motogp series. That said, I was impressed by their business turnaround a few years ago when they rescued the company from their accounting department and turned it back over to their engineers and in the process amazed the accountants. The pieces they turned out when it was owned and run by the bowling equipment manufacturer were an insult to the general title motorcycle, to anyone who'd owned a real Harley, and to the American motorcycle industry, such as it is, in general. The goofy look on the chimperor's face sort of says to me that he has no idea at all what to do if he ever got turned loose on one of the things.

Could someone tell me which picture is the President, and which one is the chimp?

I can't tell the difference.

Let me see, the intelligent-looking one must be the President, right?

So the black-and-white must be George Bush, and the color photo is the Chimp.

Am I right?

198. HD used to be class, and for some old school bikers it still is
But over the past ten-fifteen years I've seen an ever increasing group of middle aged, paunch bellied, white collar types who've all the sudden decided that they need to look "tough" or "cool" or "macho" as they head into their dotage. Thus they pick up a HD and think that they're just the shit cruising down the road. And frankly HD has responded to this trend, making their bikes more comfy, cushy, and a hell of lot tamer, with bells and whistles like stereo systems and seat warmers. Frankly I find this trend to be a complete mockery of what old shool HD was all about.

And then these fools go out on the road, and become statistics. They don't know how to ride properly, and much like SUV drivers, they lose all sense of road courtey when they start up the "hog". Nope, they're the big badass on the big bike, and by God, we're supposed to respect their "a-thor-it-tie" as they ride like complete idiots in the midst of heavy traffic.

In addition, HD itself has slipped over the years. They've added more and more accessories that require more and more repair, and their overall quality has slipped badly. I know quite a number of old school bikers who have traded in their late model bikes for ones made back in the sixties and fifties because the modern ones have too much down time for repairs and adjustments. If I were to buy a Harley, I would do the same.

I understand one's love for the older Harleys, I love them myself. But this new generation of bikes is built for a new generation of riders, namely a bunch of pretenders and posers. Give me an old pan head or knuckle head any day, not the crap their selling now.

Police bring down S. Fla. motorcycle theft ring accused of sending bikes abroad

By Sofia Santana
August 16, 2006

Fredrick Woods was a gifted mechanic who investigators said used his knowledge of motorcycles for all the wrong reasons, landing him and five others in jail Tuesday on charges they were part of a South Florida theft ring that smuggled hundreds of bikes to the Caribbean.

Woods had connections with thieves throughout the region to steal and sell the bikes, and he built devices that bypassed the ignitions on many motorcycle models, helping the thieves snatch the bikes in seconds, Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne said.

Sheriff's investigators, working with other local and federal agencies, seized 16 late-model motorcycles Saturday when they arrested the six men during simultaneous raids in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The bikes were each valued at more than $20,000.

Sheriff's investigators, Hollywood police, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami-Dade Police and the National Insurance Crime Bureau kept tabs on the group for about a year before making the arrests.

Some Democrat needs to string all Chimp's goofy photo ops together into a video entitled "Dubya Looking Presidential?".

Then, it should be posted someplace where everybody can view it.

That's the same model (FLSTNI or Softail Deluxe) I ride. That Sonofabitch is desecrating one of the last great American symbols of independence, oh wait, that's what he does for a living...

And as another poster mentioned, dubya wouldn't last two seconds in Sturgis. Not that bikers are mean, well some are, but I think the dubya disgust is pretty universal with that crowd. A lot of these bikers are Vietnam vets and union folk, and they don't like the fact that * is creating more combat vets and amputees.

I almost want to sell my bike now...

I bet nobody who even rides one of those cool little coffeehouse scooters would be caught wearing that ridiculous get-up!

So the CEO applauded him huh? that's the last Harley I will ever buy. Next bike will be a Honda for sure now. If anything your ass gets more saddle time on a Honda due to the fact that you aren't on your knees making repairs after 100 miles of riding.

Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 07:13 PM by noahmijo
"The more Harleys sold in a place like Vietnam or China or India, the more likely that somebody is going to be able to find work," Bush said.

AMERICANS can barely afford a fuckin $18,000 bike and that's STANDARD with no additional accessories or anything......not even a sissy bar....

He couldn't be more out of touch if he asked the workers why they don't put pink streamers on the handlebars.

Honestly. Bush's bike is mounted on a dyno. I don't think it could fall over in an earthquake. He can't be trusted on a Segway. He'd put a Harley down before he got out of the parking space, and then blame the bike.
