Kerry: Lieberman's Words Are "Scare-Tactic Bunk"
Kerry on Joe:

That's bunk. That's scare-tactic bunk. And it's an unfortunate statement from somebody of Joe's quality, and I regret it....

I'm not going to stand for those scare tactics, that's exactly what the Republicans have been doing for the last years. They avoid a real discussion by throwing out a slogan and they scare people....

It's a disgrace that people are playing to the lowest common denominator of American politics, which is fear.

1. Right on, Senator Kerry. We know that 'bunk' is the print-ready
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 08:55 AM by Old Crusoe
version of a less printable original, but we'll take it.

Joe needs to throw in the towel and take a long vacation someplace.

3. KNR! This is great statement
from Senator Kerry! Whatever "quality" joe lieberwhiner ever had is long gone under that neocon bridge, however.

8. Yeah, I find it ironic that
the two Dem Leaders who got couped by the bushits have turned out to be some of the best Progressives in our history, imo.

9. No Kidding
Personally, I think Kerry should have admitted to being liberal. But I also understand that the tactic of division was being used deliberately, and Kerry did not want give into GOP talking points or tactics. The truth is, many liberals or conservatives share some middle ground. Nobody is completely one-sided.

17. I actually liked his answer that he didn't agree with labels
I agree he is liberal on many issues, but he is not an ideologue - He seems to follow what he thinks is right and he is a genuinely moral person. He is more of a fiscal conservative than many other liberals. It might be that he is incredibly open to ideas and enjoys playing with them - often ending up with unigue, clever solutions.

In some ways the images of an honest prosecutor and investigator wanting the country to be true to its principles and to follow its laws and a pragmatic problem solver who wants to do his best to craft plans to help people are as accurate as the other views of Kerry - a war hero or an eloquent advocate for ending a war that needed ending. He really seems far more multi-dimensional than other politicians (or people for that matter.)

19. I Agree with Your Assessment
Ideology is a dangerous game to get wrapped up in. He knew the GOP was trying to bait him. And it was an honest answer, for I can remember when I was first called a Liberal. I looked at the person and I asked him if it really made a difference as to what I was. The issue was intentionally dodged when he labeled me. A really shallow tactic used by folks with weak arguments.

24. I am old enough that in college
the majority of kids were proudly liberal - even at Indiana University. I graduated in 1972. I do think that at a point when an election is not around the corner, someone answering as McGovern did in a magazine (Atlantic or Harpers, I think) a few years ago that almost all advances in our freedom, rights and security, were fought for by liberal would be good. The word needs to be reclaimed.

(For example, if Kerry had won and then proceded to clean up the mess and maybe in a second term when he (hopefully) was seen as having been a very good President - then giving some thoughtful comments on liberalism would be nice.)

25. I Tell People Today That I Am Liberal
I have no problem with it. And I agree with what you said, about someone, anyone from our party saying they are proud of having liberal ideals or at least admitting to being one.

22. During the debates, they were edited to look timid? By ALL the networks?
Kerry doing nothing when swiftboated was a media construct? I think not.

They were timid campaigners who failed to stand up when it mattered. The brave media faces they put on now that we're irreversibly fucked mean nothing.

23. Kerry won the debates hands down and did not look the least bit
timid or weak. Bush looked like a lunatic in the first debate. Kerry looked and sounded very Presidential, intelligent and gave very good answers. Do you remember:

Kerry calling Bush out when he said Saddam attacked us? He had Bush saying, "I know that, I know that"

Kerry speaking of Bush letting OBL escape at Tora Bora because he outsourced the effort to surround Tora Bora to the Afghan warlords who weeks before were loyal to the Taliban.

Kerry saying that they didn't guard the ammo dumps and the insurgents were using it in the IEDs that were killing and injuring "our kids"

Kerry was there every day issuing pointed, accurate damning accusations - and on some the media questioned him (story front page) conceded he was right (page 10+ or after the election). The Kerry you saw was not the one I saw.

There is a research thread that lists in detail all that was done on the SBVT. The media played with the stories for months after many many lies were completely refuted. The official record was entirely in Kerry's favor, Nixon had people look into him and they found he was a hero and a squeaky clean kid, Senator Warner (VN era Secretary of the Navy) said he had looked at Kerry's awards when they came in and they were deserved and in order. That the entire media gave these liars weight at all is incredibly suspicious.

By the way, what if I said - I know that the grades on your transcript are false. I went to school with you and saw your grades on tests in Calculus and English Comp - prove you didn't get Ds in both. By the way (as in Kerry's case, the official record (the transcript) doesn't count. (Also ignore I don't know your name or what school you went too. But the burden of proof is on you.)

11. more and more seem to be realizing that
Bill Clinton, too, has made statements comparing lieberman's statements and position to bush/cheney/rumsfeld. He is a threat to our agenda and to our chances nationally this year, and ought be treated accordingly.

14. That's why I like Kerry better than Bill Clinton
Before the primary, Clinton campaigned for Joe. Now after Lamont has won, he's willing to criticize Joe. That's why I can never quite trust what he says.

Kerry, on the other hand said before the primary that he would support the Dem nominee, and otherwise stayed out of it--which I think was absolutely the right thing to do. And now that Lamont has won it, Kerry is making good on his promise and supporting him.

(Personally I think he favored him all along--Lamont's views seem to line up more on the liberal side like Kerry's).

That's why I can trust what John Kerry says. He doesn't lie. He either tells it like it is, or stays quiet on a subject. Good politician, good leader, loyal Democrat.
