"...In the Absence of Genuine Leadership..." (A Message to Joe Lieberman)

Tonight, there's a message in Ned Lamont's victory. The message is not only for Joe Lieberman, but for every politician in this country, and I think, especially the Democrats who have fallen to political cowardice and been complicit in George Bush's failed agenda.

As I think about Lamont's victory, I can't help but be reminded of a simple but very powerful line from the movie The American President.

In the movie, presidential aide Lewis Rothschild (played by Michael J. Fox), says to the 'President':

"People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand."

In the absence of Joe Lieberman's leadership on the important issues of the day, Ned Lamont stepped up to the microphone, and Connecticut voters listened.

That should be a lesson for every politician in this country.

Every politician in this country SHOULD be learning from this election

We are tired of the minority party capitulating to Fascist, perverse thugs. We've grown weary---as the Dems act like a bunch of wimps who just got their lunch money stolen.

We want leadership! Exactly!!

This election sends a message to Dems. However, it send an even bigger message to Republicans who have upcoming elections in 06. Dems are galvanized against this horrendous agenda. We are angry. We want change. We will be voting in extremely high numbers.

I think this election is a signal to Republicans--demonstrating just how screwed they really are.

Junior has united so many (Dems, Independents and some Republicans) against him, and they're yearning for something better.

Look out--all BushCo supporters--in November!

3. Thank you, and you're exactly right

You hit the nail on the head when you said every politician should be learning from this.

Sadly though, I doubt they will. And here's why. I think too many politicians begin to feel a sense of entitlement to their position, especially the longer they've held office. And I think you see that in Joe Lieberman's decision to force his way onto the November ballot as an Independent. I get the sense that he feels entitled to his position as Senator; like it is his for life.

Every politician needs to remember that they are NOT career civil servants. They serve at the pleasure of the voters.
