As we watch a pretend-Democratic go down in flames tonight, I hope that we all take a moment to thank our Founding Fathers for their efforts, which have enabled good people to "throw the bum out".
The Founders were not perfect. And they knew that common slobs like us were also imperfect. They knew that we'd elect thieves, pinheads, cowards, and megalomaniacs to office, as we've done in the past 30 or so years.
As Ben Franklin said at the Constitutional Convention:
"In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any other."
But the Founders also knew that, when push came to shove, we'd regain our common sense and vote for change. The elaborate system of laws that they put into place really had one primary aim - to preserve the right to vote for as long as possible when tyranny tried to end it. Only through leveraging the vote can we have a peaceful change of power from the despotic back to the good.
The Bush administration has tried to assume dictatorial powers. The Congress refused to do its duty and stop Bush. Fortunately, the courts are still doing their job - they stopped Bush. And now, in Connecticut, The People have done their job. Hopefully, The People will continue to do their job, and fix the broken Executive and Legislative branches - we'll see.
Most Republicans that I know believe that Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, and the rest of the gang are now roasting in Hell because they did not accept Christ as a divine savior. I hope that the Republicans are as wrong about this as they are wrong about everything else; I expect that the Founders are in Heaven now, smiling upon the good people in the State of Connecticut. In due time I hope that the rest of us can also bring smiles to their faces, by restoring
"government of the people, by the people, and for the people".
