Poll question: Lieberman v. Lamont tomorrow: Place yer bets, place yer bets!
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 08:17 AM by WilliamPitt
With polls showing Lamont leading the three-term incumbent, Lieberman at last moved to confront the issues -- opposition to the war and anger with Bush -- that have put his political career in jeopardy. The decision came after a lengthy debate within his campaign over whether he could win the primary without directly addressing his position on the war and his relationship with the president.

Lieberman has gained ground on his challenger in the past four days, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released early Monday morning. The poll showed Lamont at 51 percent to Lieberman's 45 percent. Last Thursday, the same poll put the race at Lamont 54 percent, Lieberman 41 percent.

Lieberman has hammered Lamont in radio ads aimed at African American voters, stressing his own civil rights record while criticizing Lamont for his recent membership in a country club that the ads say is not know for its diversity. Lieberman advisers hope the late TV and radio blitz and the Sunday speech on Iraq will force Connecticut Democrats to think again before voting against the incumbent on Tuesday.

1. Lamont in a walk
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 08:20 AM by matcom
I hope

IF it's a walk, look for Joe to bow out and NOT run as an independent.

reason? his wife is a lobbyist and THAT would be bad for 'buisness'

31. I'm with you matcom....Lamont in a walk
I didn't know Joe's wife was a lobbyist...she is all business was my first impression of her when I met her in 2002 and Joe who was just the opposite with his big smile and charm reaching for my hand and covering it with his other.
His voting record doesn't match what the people of CT has been asking for and certainly not ours.

It's time for them to retire and let someone really represent what the people need and want from their Senator.

As always matcom your posts always make me laugh or definitely smile, I can always count on it....those in the Lounge can be quite funny. :7

Good thread William...Hugs to you both!

I expect that Diebold, Sequoia and ES&S would be only too happy to make sure that Lieberman remains in office.

8. NO! DRE-free in CT
SOS cancelled the state's order for the machines (all Diebold) after she found Diebold had lied about the security of the machines in their proposal for the state. So she stopped them all, and we're using the old lever machines.

5. Electronic fraud is not a factor, BUT, as we've seen in Florida & Ohio...
There's more than one way to cheat in an election.

Big factor in this race will be the rush of CT's 44% "unaffiliated" to register Democratic.

9. Boy, how desperate
Lieberman is--flinging mud and trying to act like a true "Democrat." I don't know who will win the race, but all I know is that Joe doesn't represent ANY liberal views that I care to know about right now, and his past associations with the Bush clan show me that he is NOT worth a plug nickel as a senator for OUR party.

My hopes go to Ned Lamont in the vain hope that he will win and return that Senate seat into a more sane and reasoned one.

13. This isn't desperate
You'll see desperate if Joe loses, and decides to run as an Independent in the general. He will split the Dem vote and give the seat to the GOP by doing so.

That is desperate. Watch. If he loses, he just might do it.

I'm not taking the bet, because that's what I'm also thinking. The problem is, simply, that Joe has proven himself to be an unutterly deplorable, sublimely craven douchebag, so there's that margin which can't be accounted for by logic or best interests. There is also this aspect: if he loses and decides not to run Indy, and thus is out of the Senate, his wife's lobbying muscle will diminish. It might be worth it to both of them to try a kamikaze run.

We'll probably know by tomorrow night.

When are you coming out to Boston?

40. Lanny Davis suggested that Lieberman would definitely run...
as an Independent if he did not win the primary. I don't know how much inside info he might have but he mentioned that on one of the talk shows yesterday. I do agree that Joe has become accustomed to his position and he will not surrender it without fighting to the bitter end.

But, in my opinion, he will not maintain a lot of Democratic support if he runs as an Independent. Rpublicans do not like to switch Parties. However, the political reality with the dislike for this Administration may bring out a few to vote for Joe? I would doubt that he would get enough Dems and Reps combined to win the race. He would probably take a similar number from both Parties and it would be a wash? And Lamont would still win if he wins the primary.

This line is just absurd " criticizing Lamont for his recent membership in a country club that the ads say is not known for its diversity."

As if the Senate itself is known for its diversity.

Find me a club in the Northeast that is known for its diversity and I'll show you a YMCA. Country clubs are generally bastions for old white money throughout New England but I'd imagine they are especially elitist in Connecticut for some reason.

A July 20 Quinnipiac University Poll shows that in a two way race between Lamont and Schlesinger, Lamont has 45% and Schlesinger has 22%. That's a greater lead than Casey has over Santorum.

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x11362.xml?ReleaseID=940

I realize that many are concerned that Lamont is fairly unknown until recently. But Alan Schlesinger is a GOP sacrificial lamb who was weakened even further by a gambling scandal. He stands no chance against the democratic nominee whether it be Senator Lieberman or Ned Lamont. As I have said in the past, if Jodi Rell or Chris Shays were running for the seat then I might have some concerns.

It does indeed mean cover-up. Well let's hope that it doesn't come to that. Anyway the option was still looking lonely without a single vote and if I made it feel a little bit better by giving it a vote then all is right with the world for at least a few minutes.

56. Repukes can't cross over and vote
because it's a closed primary. Non affiliated could switch to Democratic. Also new voters could register. The deadline was noon today. But the deadline to switch from one party to another was May 8. Lieberman's people weren't worried back then. It's possible that among the non affiliated registering as Dems are people who are really Republicans in the way they vote. But it's also true that here in CT the majority of Independents are against the war. So we'll see what happens. Could be they still love him no matter what. But it could be they are registering to throw him out. Or it could be split. No one knows until tomorrow. I am cautiously optimistic but I think it could go either way. I just don't know at this point.
