Meet the Neighbor from HELL.

(Looks almost like a normal human being, huh?)

A nightmarish neighbor: noisy, nosy, now in jail
Police say they hauled guns, ammo, drugs from his home
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Cicero A. Estrella, Chronicle Staff Writers
Thursday, January 19, 2006

Don Bertone is not your usual problem neighbor, San Francisco authorities say.

For three years, Bertone, who once worked for the city Housing Authority and ran for the Board of Supervisors in 2000, has wreaked all sorts of havoc in an otherwise quiet community in the southeastern part of the city known as Little Hollywood, officials and his neighbors said Wednesday.

Bertone, 54, doesn't just play loud music, authorities say. At all hours of the day and night, he has blasted police radio broadcasts, shrill oscillating tones, Spanish dance tunes and other noise from speakers he installed on the outside of his home at 336 Lathrop Ave. Police said they could hear the racket from 100 yards away.

Bertone isn't just a nosy neighbor, they add.

Police said he hooked up floodlights and six cameras that swept the block. Inside his home, he could monitor his neighbors' movements on four video screens.

Bertone is not merely unpleasant, authorities say.

Officers who searched his home Tuesday allegedly found a high-powered assault rifle complete with a flash suppressor, two handguns and 3,000 rounds of ammunition as well as an undisclosed "explosive device.''

2. I dunno, all that electrical equipment
I mean, one frayed wire on the house's exterior, a spark jumps, and you know, his whole house might just go up in flames. Things like that happen all the time, you know?

9. A friend of mine
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 12:29 PM by hobbit709
had some neighbors that liked to play their rap-crap full blast late at night. After several go-rounds involving the police, as soon as the cops left these bastards would turn it up even louder. I was there one night when they had it so loud that the outside kitchen wall at his house was vibrating-this was the side of the house away from them. One night my friend had enough and went over to the side of their house, pulled the main power breaker below the meter and padlocked the box. They moved out 2 days later.

6. Well this right here probably explains a lot of this guys actions
"Inside his home, officers allegedly found . . methamphetamines and cocaine" Yeah boy howdy, this guy sure does sound like a King Tweaker. Paranoid, pissed and armed, all whilst on the meth. Not a good combination. Hope they throw the book at this asshole, and give his neighbors some peace.

8. i have one of those too. this is just too funny
first 7 years they had three rotweillers that ran in a pack, now two pit bulls. camera's everywhere, flood lights and a confederate flag. they have no running water or electricity........ the use a generator. been doing drugs since before i moved in. dea knows it so do many cops in town but they ignore it. they are one of "they" families in town. the blacksheep.

lives off a trust

a couple years ago, swat team in our yard late out night, had a stand off. one night husband and i went out leaving father to babysit kids. cops wouldnt let us go home. hubby went thru alley. three hours of a stand off. they found 56 weapons, machine guns, silencers..... all kinds of legal stuff. their house was condemned. their family sent them out of town. all assured us they were gone for good. a year later ..... they came back, and i watch em deal, day after day after day.... and not a damn thing is done

a gun goes off, the kids scatter. we call the cops. and the cops tell us,..... well they dont answer the door, nothing we could do. i told the cop, go figure, i thought i had to answer door when you knocked on it. will remember that.

12. I had more than one of those when I was a city dweller.
This is why I am a rural dweller today. Even though I still have a few undesirable neighbors, at least I don't hear or see them that much.

13. THose types are actually pretty common in the sticks.
You're lucky if there are none around you, but my neighborhood here in SF is WAY quieter than my Grandma's small rural town in N. Texas, which is crawling with meth fiends and wild, drunken yahoos.

19. You have to be careful where you plant yourself.
That's true. My house is on a private road that only a few of us are authorized to use. No trespassing yahoos allowed. I do get the helicopters overhead a lot though.

17. When I moved to my rural house I got Swat Teams/helicopters and
tons of law enforcement agencies that were called because a neighbor half a mile up the road thought the CIA was after him. The standoff that ensued after he fired shots from the house at the first responding Sheriffs lasted over 12 hours.

The helicopters that brought in the Swat teams landed across the street about 500 feet down the road from me and marched up the road to the "action". The amount of weaponry that the Swat team members had was horrifying. They had something in every pocket, in their boots, over their shoulders and in their hands.

Luckily no one was hurt and the guy was finally hauled off to the looney bin (definitely needed his meds adjusted, did hear that they had recently changed his dosage)

So much for peaceful county living...

20. Where were you living? Ruby Ridge?
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 01:25 PM by Cleita
So far I haven't experienced anything like that, even when DH and I were living close to Ruby Ridge in Idaho. Back then we used to go way back into the woods with our trailer. Bears and cougars were our bad neighbors then.

When we had to settle down, we parked our trailer in the kid's back forty. Actually, it's an ranching area where people raise horses and alpacas for a hobby. No meth labs here. The high and mighty don't allow it.

My nearest pesky neighbor is a junk collector. Every now and then the county comes around and gives him a citations making him get rid of a lot of it.

14. There's no indication of his political views...
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 12:50 PM by kiki
...but I will personally bet a brazillion dollars that he's a Bush supporter. Can't you just... tell? Loves his guns and loves his "freedom" (ie, to own more guns).

At any rate, what a world-class shithead.

(And in reply to the post above, he does indeed resemble "The Hass".)

Somehow I doubt it's the same guy... I'm sure they'd mention any political activity in the news story.

In another article on him, he says he's the victim of a "witch hunt". Sounds like the classic Republican MO to me - pisses in your face, then when you complain, whips out his official Victim Card and calls for the whaaaaambulance.

18. Yup, that's him
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 01:05 PM by Sammy Pepys
Everything I've found identifies him as a Little Hollywood resident, and earlier news stories about the problem mention more of his community work and effort to run for some policialt offices. One artiucle referred to him as an "activist."

EDIT: Here's some more:

"Don Bertone, who for many years has served the community as president of the Little Hollywood Association also chaired the Planning Commission's Local Health Risk Assessment Committee and served on the Board of Supervisors Airport Noise Committee, the Coalition For San Francisco Neighborhoods, and the All Peoples Coalition as well as being involved with R.O.S.E.S. and S.F. Beautiful."
