The 2005 Year in Review stream of consciousness
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 09:55 AM by underpants
I am sure many of us wanted to compile a 2005 Year in Review but as I am looking through news stories all kinds of things I forgot about keep popping up. 2005 will be mostly known for three things (IMHO)
1.Katrina-we will be seeing&feeling the effects of that for years
2.the death of Pope John Paul II
3.the begin of W's second (gasp) term

THE top political story, to me, this year was Terri Schiavo and the Republican news/issue/spin machine ripped open and exposed for all to see. I know that the indictments of Libby and Delay and the Abramoff things WILL be huge but they were concluded this year so I go with Schiavo. That really got the ball rolling downhill and it took out the curtain with it.

So I start with that add as you like.

Remember W's note to Condi asking to go to the bathroom?
Remember that big a** rock in the middle of the PCH back in the spring? (great photo that one)
Remember Cheney at Auschwitz?

Remember Neal Horsley?

NH: "Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule."

AC: "I'm not so sure that that is so."

NH: "You didn't grow up on a farm in Georgia, did you?"

AC: "Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?"

NH: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality... Welcome to domestic life on the farm.

4. Camp Casey
Cindy Sheehan's group camping near bush's Texas ranch waiting to talk to him for WEEKS, then taking it on the road in their red white and blue bus, and then the huge Washington DC march on September 24th. I know there wasn't much news coverage of the march, but there was a good bit of coverage of the Texas group - and chicken bush trying to avoid them.

6. My personal favorite - White House Arrests for civil disobedience
(this is the abstract only - WaPo charges for archives)

In an action that they had planned several weeks ago and discussed with police, the demonstrators went to the White House gate on Pennsylvania Avenue NW about 12:30 p.m. and tried to deliver to President Bush the names of all the soldiers and civilians killed in Iraq. When the president did not meet with them, they sat down for their protest.

"You are a coward! You didn't meet us in Crawford; come meet us now," said Beatriz Saldivar of Fort Worth, whose nephew, Army Sgt. Daniel Torres, was killed in action nearly eight months ago during his second tour in Iraq. In August, Saldivar had joined antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan during a protest outside the president's Texas ranch, when Sheehan had asked to talk with Bush about the death of her son, Casey Sheehan, in Iraq.

At his daily news briefing yesterday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush is "very much aware" of the past few days of protests and "recognizes that there are differences of opinion" on the Iraq war.

8. Sen Mary Landrieu saying she would punch Bush in the face!!!
One of the greatest moments of the year, IMHO.

(Yes, as a pacifist that makes me a hypocrite. But if anyone points that out to me, I just may have to punch them in the face :P )
