Hartford Courant runs good article on Lamont's Colbert appearance,
http://www.courant.com/news/yahoo/hc-lamont0801.artaug01,0,7559722.story?coll=hc-aol-yahoo-nws-hed

If you missed the show--or if, like me, you don't have a TV--you can get a feel for how it went here. It's almost a line by line transcript. Lamont comes across as poised, relaxed, and confident. And the crowd loved him. Whoot!

1. For those with TV and time, Colbert reairs at 7:30amCT,
Comedy Central, after The Daily Show. I'm watching and thanks for the reminder, femmedem.

2. Lamont didn't seem relaxed, but that's not a bad thing, necessarily.
Lamont seemed a bit nervous and stiff, and a little smilingly awkward, and he didn't seem to be able to banter with Colbert in a joking way -- but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Lamont, to me, appeared to opt NOT to attempt to joke with a comedian on a comedy show -- a strategy missed or ignored by others, in the past, to their detriment -- but he found opportunities to emphasize his main issue: Lieberman needs to go, due to his complicity with the Bush Admin.

I wish Lamont had come up with a better answer as to why he's a Democrat, but his performance was competent, overall. I can't see how it could have cost him any votes.

4. Thanks for the info.
The Courant endorsed Lieberman, so it's interesting to me that they ran this piece which doesn't mention any awkwardness at all.

7. The reporting staff and editorial staff
are separate and don't always agree. :)

10. Hi neighbor!
Even some of the editorial staff at the Courant seems quite good. I think there are some decent holdouts from before the paper got bought. I wrote an Op-Ed for the Courant a few years ago and the editor who worked with me was thorough, professional and quite sympathetic to my point of view.

On the other hand, I have a LTTE in today's Courant, and the editor who called me yesterday asked if it was true that Gonzales used the word quaint to describe the Geneva Conventions. The editor was very polite, and I appreciate that he wanted me to send verifying links so the paper wouldn't run garbage letters, but still...I was shocked that he didn't know about this.

How are you holding up in this heat? I have an appt. later on. I am going to swing by Stop and Shop and get stuff to make salads with. I told hubby I am not turning on the stove today! He likes antipasto salad so that's good! :7

Edit--found it! Most of the letters in response to the endorsement were also negative (toward the endorsement).

12. Holding up okay, thanks
This is the first year I've had an air-conditioned room. I would never get air-conditioning for myself, but I have two pet rabbits who would die in temperatures over 85, so now I don't suffer either( except from guilt.)

Salad sounds good to me. It's Farmers' Market day here in New London. :)

Back closer to topic: Yes, I was very happy to see so many letters supporting Lamont. I hope they mitigate the Courant's lousy endorsement.

14. Looks like he took Al Franken's
advice and not joke with the comedian.

Lamont came across as a real person to me..someone I'd like to see a lot more of.

15. Ha! Yep, I caught that in the article (read after posting)
Generally good advice, as has been demonstrated on numerous TDS and Colbert programs.

5. "generating the most applause in memory"
Not too shabby.

"Should we hinder the president, sir?" Colbert asked. "It is a time of war. Shouldn't we stand behind him unquestioning?"

"No, not when he is wrong," Lamont said. "When he is wrong, it is our duty to stand up."

Lamont said Lieberman had suggested dissent under those circumstances was wrong. "I think it is our obligation to stand up as citizens," he said.

The audience again burst into applause. In the green room, Hillsman said the moment suggested Jimmy Stewart, a reference to the Stewart movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

A Colbert staffer nodded.

13. Excellent!
This cracked me up..

"Colbert, whose onscreen persona is the unctuous newsman, dropped by the crowded green room a few minutes before air time. To Lamont, he confided, "I play a character, and he's an idiot."

How many guests are Stephen going to say that to?

KNR!
