Kucinich Introduces Legislation to Abolish All Nuclear Weapons
Kucinich Introduces Legislation to Abolish All Nuclear Weapons
t r u t h o u t | Press Release

Thursday 27 July 2006

...................

"In the Hindu religion Brahma, the creator, Vishnu, the preserver, and Siva, the destroyer, exist simultaneously and represent the multiplicity of God. Today, we are going to be called upon to determine which of the principles - creator, preserver or destroyer - shall work through each of us.

"If we continue to pursue nuclear proliferation embodied in the nuclear agreement with India we will be open to the principles of destruction. At this moment when world tensions are rising and violence is cycling wider, we need to take the direction of preserving the peace, and creating a new opening through the abolishment of all nuclear weapons.

"August 6th, 2006, will mark the 61st anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, which obliterated the city and killed about 140,000 people. Today, 30,000 nuclear weapons remain in the world. Many nuclear weapons are deployed. Any use of nuclear weapons would result in unthinkable devastation. The only way to prevent nuclear destruction is to abolish all nuclear weapons.

............................

Today, Kucinich introduced legislation, HR 950, to abolish all nuclear weapons. The Kucinich resolution states: "That the House of Representatives calls upon the President to initiate multilateral negotiations for the abolition of nuclear weapons."

Unfortunately, this bill has no chance of ever passing. It is too bad, because we, as a planet, would be better off.

12. MAD will always be the norm...
Sometime in the future we will get rid of nukes but only because we've found something more destructive.

13. Keeping these from terrorists is a smart idea
I think most Americans would be on board with a global plan to abolish nuclear weapons and think the proliferation under Bush is just another example of his failed administration.

15. I think we should campaign on it
A completely new strategy on terrorism that will really work and really keep us safe. It's not actually completely new, nuclear non-proliferation has been an issue for many Democrats for a long time now.

40. How is banning nukes being soft on crime and terror?
Nukes are probably the biggest terror weapons man-kind has ever devised.

8. "TANKLV INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PUT TOOTHPASTE BACK IN TUBE"
That has a bigger chance of success.

or:

"TANKLV INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO UNSOUR MILK"

None are going to happen.

We can just elect representatives to insure they are never used...

10. Some questions, or a question, for all:
If I pass a starving child on the street, should I withhold support in the way of a meal because my one meal won't save her, or should I feed her, because it's the right thing to do?

If I see a fight between my students on the playground, should I step in and stop it, or should I turn a blind eye because my intervention won't abolish playground bullying or violence?

When I have a chance to do the right thing, should I abstain because the rest of the world won't do it with me, or should I stand on principle and do the right thing anyway?

Which is more likely to create change: people seeing others who make ethical choices regardless of whether or not the world supports them, or people who see everyone else shying away from the discomfort of standing on principle?

Is "Everybody does it," or "Nobody will join me," a legitimate or appropriate excuse for non-action?

If abolishing nuclear weapons is the right thing to do, which action will lead us closer to that eventual possibility:

*citizens of the world standing up and saying so, and supporting propositions by enlightened leaders,

*or citizens of the world engaging in collective defeatism when such a proposition is made?

I, for one, will stand with the authors and co-sponsors of HR 950, because it's the right thing to do. The more people that stand up, the louder the voice, the more the concept will reach, the more it will take hold in people's consciousness, the sooner the world will become that change.

17. It seems that the fight is also to
wait to do the right thing, right now we have an election to win. While I can almost understand that I can't abide it.

Excellent post. Seems I am following you around today, several very excellent posts from you today. I have missed seeing you around.

21. It's summer!
More discretionary time at the 'puter. ;)

It also means, unfortunately, that I'm avoiding/procrastinating other chores. I have a massive amount of cleanup in the shop to do, a water tank to scrub out, hens to put saddles on, weeds to chop down, a barn to clean, and new fence to put up. My floors also need mopping, and my back steps need repair. So what am I doing? Hiding with my computer, lol.

There is always an election going on; I get to vote for something every year. If we "wait for the election to be over," we get to perpetually "wait" for action that never happens. It's a good tool to keep people in that state, the "wait until....." talking point, isn't it?

29. Your schedule sounds much like mine
and here I am today on the computer as well but we are getting a long needed, slow rain so I am very happy to be sitting here.

Can I ask? Why and how do you saddle hens? My house is started, we are finally moving to my farm and hens are on my list but this I have never heard of.

Yup, always an election, always a reason to wait to do the hard but important stuff.

31. To ride them, silly!
:silly:

Really, so that the roosters don't rub them raw and featherless when they go for "rides." all 8 of my hens have featherless, raw backs. The one I "saddled" this morning also has an open, oozing wound. I hope it's rooster damage and not cheat grass.

I'm hoping that with the saddles, they can grow some feathers back before winter.

26. I'd agree with that
In fact, that's generally my biggest complaint with Dennis Kucinich et al - beautiful altruistic ideas with absolutely NO concrete plan to implement them.

28. And I'd agree with that.
It would be a wonderful world if his plan worked. But it isn't a wonderful world, and is in no danger of becoming one anytime soon. We should confront China with his plan - they probably need a good belly laugh.

Kudos to Dennis for dreaming, but that's really all it is. Nukes are going to be every developed country's ace in the hole for a long time to come. Sad but true.

36. those ridiculing Kucinich and the notion of banning nukes miss the point
no, it's not going to happen, at least in our lifetime . . . there could never be enough trust established among nations/societies/cultures for it to work . . .

but that's no reason not to discuss it as a worthwhile goal for humankind and for preservation of life on the planet . . . just getting the issue on the table is a huge step from where we are now . . .

at one point in time, humanity got together and agreed to abolish slavery . . . the fact that slavery still exists does not diminish the worth of the intent -- it just means we have to work harder . . .
