It’s the wee hours of the morning, still dark outside. A guerrilla force comes out of nowhere to kidnap a soldier. After hours of careful movement, the force reaches its target, and the ambush is on! In seconds, the soldier finds himself looking down the barrel of a rifle.

A smash in the face with the butt of the gun and the soldier falls to the ground, bleeding. The kidnappers pick him up, quickly tie his hands and blindfold him, and disappear into the night.

This might be the end of the kidnapping, but the nightmare has just begun. The soldier’s mother collapses, his father prays. His commanding officers promise to do everything they can to get him back, his comrades swear revenge. An entire nation is up in arms, writhing in pain and worry.

Nobody knows how the soldier is: Is he hurt? Do his captors give him even a minimum of human decency, or are they torturing him to death by trampling his honor? The worst sort of suffering is not knowing. Will he come home? And if so, when? And in what condition? Can anyone remain apathetic in the light of such drama?

This description, you’ll be surprised to know, has nothing to do with the capture of Gilad Shalit (the Israeli soldier taken prisoner in Gaza). It is the story of an arrest I carried out as an IDF soldier, in the Nablus casbah, about 10 years ago. The “soldier” was a 17-year-old boy, and we kidnapped him because he knew “someone” who had done “something.”

For every Israeli killed, captured, or injured in the ME conflict, hundreds of Palestinians have been murdered, languished in Isreali jails, or were maimed by the IDF. I nearly threw my shoe at the hotel television the other night as CNN reported breathlessly from Haifa, where the Israeli toll is a small fraction of that suffered by Lebanese at the hands of Israel. Yet CNN made much of the relative quiet in the streets of downtown Haifa, as though missed shopping opportunities were somehow the equivalent of being blown to burned hamburger by Israeli bombs and artillery.

8. The dehumanization of the enemy

is an appalling thing to watch and listen to when I turn on the TV lately.

Their hatred of everyone and everything that is not like them is at an all time high. The hate and ugliness in their souls is apparent, despite millions of dollars worth of plastic surgery and hair transplants to cover it up.

16. A very good 'The Outer Limits' episode a while back

Earth's soldiers were on a mining planet, in the middle of a war between Earth's forces and those of a buglike alien race. They were there to rescue some hostages or take out some of the enemy. I forget.

Anyway, one of the problems of fighting an alien race, as we've all learned from the original HG Wells' War of the Worlds is alien viruses. As a solution, the soldiers needed to continually take in an anti-viral solution through special tubes and hardware strapped-on 24/7. Well, one of the soldier's equipment began to malfunction and he started suffering symptoms... fever, hallucinations, etc. During some of his hallucinations, the alien bugs began to take-on human-like form.

Cutting to the chase... The "medicine" was actually a hallucinogenic, causing the English-speaking/American-like soldiers to view their enemies as buglike creatures, though their enemies were actually Asian. (And the Asian soldiers had similar "medicine" to provide them with their necessary hallucinations.) Dehumanizing the enemy through propaganda was no longer necessary; it could now be more reliably done through drugs.

But, seriously, that story is so illustrative of the 2 sides of the situation.

Kind of like when the Bitch Queen's police were throwing female IRA members into drunk tanks in English jails and leaving them there for a few weeks with a revolving cast of drunken Brits. And then everyone would act all horrified when the IRA would off a few Bobbies.

I almost went over to join in, but my wife (at the time) became pregnant.
