I think the best way to deal with him was what happened in my own city. He and his family were protesting the gay friendly policies at the university. Two men, who later said they barely knew each other, went into a passionate and very long soul kiss right in front of Phelps.

The Phelps family got disgusted and left.

You can deal with these people best by ridicule, not by laws. Every time you pass a law against things like disrupting funerals with demonstrations, you attack the first amendment. That amendment is too precious to risk.

the fundamental concept behind the 1st amendment (as opposed to many other countries that ban hate speech, speech that "vilifies religion" etc.) is that bad speech and bad ideas are best countered when in the open. that way they can be digested, and ridiculed/countered by better ideas. bigots are best opposed when allowed to openly express their stupid ideas, and then be faced with the opposition

it is (like the 2nd amendment) a fundamental trust put in CITIZENS ***Not*** govt. because it gives citizens the power to express ANY idea, and access any idea, with the express understanding that a free people will be free to choose the good

furthermore, it recognizes the idea that if a govt. can choose what ideas are outside the realm of discussion, then we stop being citizens and start being subjects. i don't want my govt. telling me what ideas i can be exposed to, or what i can say
