It's a sin to fly, says church

THE Bishop of London has declared it sinful for people to contribute to climate change by flying on holiday, driving a “gas-guzzling” car or failing to use energy-saving measures in the home, writes Jonathan Leake.

Richard Chartres will encourage vicars to preach more green sermons and warn congregations that it is now a moral obligation for Christians to lead eco-friendly lifestyles.

Chartres, who chairs the bishops’ panel on the environment, said: “There is now an overriding imperative to walk more lightly upon the earth and we need to make our lifestyle decisions in that light.

“Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin. Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.”

4. The no fly thing is just silly!
Airplanes are going to fly because it's part of the way the World operates!

If they want to get upset with something, it should be the cost of the F15's & F18's, the Bradley's etc and the fuel THEY consume! It should be the people who jump in the car and run to the store every day, and sometimes more than once, because they can't think about what they're going to need and only shop once a week! How about the fuel used in powering boats and jet skis?

6. FYI
Most Britons don't "jump in the car and run to the store everyday" and very, very, VERY few of them have Jet-Skis or power boats. Far fewer than in this country.

Comparably cheap flights operate from minor airports in the UK to other European nations. I am guilty of this myself, having used RyanAir a lot when I lived only 10 miles from Stansted, in Essex. We flew to Salzburg, round trip, for $100. And other places. This is a major problem.

It's also negatively affecting the British economy, as thousands of Britons who in previous years would've flocked to the beaches of Brighton, Blackpool, etc., now have the ability, thanks to cheap flights, to go to real beaches in Spain, France, etc. And now that they know the difference, they will be none too happy to stay back in often-cloudy, often-cold England for their family breaks.

$0.02.

8. The beach part is true here too

I can't phantom going to a beach in the US when Mexico is a shot plane ride away.

12. People over there also have the option of trains
A lot of trains. So it is possible to go places without flying OR driving.

I think people in the US might forget that possibility.

14. Yes, as much as people bitch about the trains
(& rightly so at the ticket prices they charge!)

they have no idea how lucky they are compared to most Americans, who have neither train nor bus.

9. Whaaaa?
He's british, addressing a british audience. What is hypocritical about this statement? "There is now an overriding imperative to walk more lightly upon the earth and we need to make our lifestyle decisions in that light.

“Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin. Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.”

Makes a lot of sense to me.

Oh andy PS: It is Israeli war planes and bombs killing Lebanese, not US. And yes I know we sold them to them.

11. Fine, I agree the brits are complicit in what's happening in Lebanon, but
I'm not sure what that's got to do with global warming or one priest's effort to speak out about it.
