The real reason they don't want stem cell research
Are they afraid there will be cures for a lot of diseases and the pharmaceutical companies will not make money from it? That's exactly what it is, since they think they can't make money off it they want to block it. They'd rather let people die.

2. This is an immoral mafia running our country.
Never underestimate their evil.

They are not Americans, they are corporatists.

3. I think you are at least partially correct.
There is no way Big Pharma wants cures for anything. They make their profits off of maintenance programs and suppressing symptoms.

4. Any cures derived from stem cells will be expensive ones
and trust me, people will still need all the drugs we have now plus all the limp dick and baldness cures that are in the pipeline.

Stupid vetoed the funding because Stupid hates anything that has the potential to help anyone but himself. He's also astonishingly ignorant and totally incurious, so he can't be educated.

All we can do is oust him.

5. Since it's so immoral shouldn't they be blowing up fretility clinics
or making it a crime to used these 'snowflakes' as medical waste?

6. I'm sorry, but I doubt that
the pharmaceutical companies seem to be good at making increasingly more expensive drugs anyway. Getting cures from stem cell research will cost plenty to the patient when the time comes.

7. All that I am asking for is the following
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 05:46 PM by DanCa
A: Is that they are intellectually honest about not wanting the research.
B: That those who dont want the research go inside a stem cell lab.
Just watch the procedure and go witness it first hand.
C: Sit in my wheel chair for just one day.
Is that too much too ask?

9. It's a possibility, but ...
... I think more than likely, Bush, Cheney or anyone in their cabinet personally don't give a SHIT about stem cell research and probably know next to nothing about it.

The cabal is just huffing and puffing in order to make sure they keep the Religiously Insane vote locked up in November and beyond.

If you recall, Poppy was pro-choice when he tried to get the GOP nom in '80 and the fundies lined up behind Ronnie. So in '88, Poppy miraculously became anti-abortion.

:eyes:

It's all about the votes. :puke:

Probably not the only reason, though.

12. It's "planned obsolescence" carried to the extreme.
It's possible, even simple, for example to manufacture a light bulb that will last 100 years, a tire that will go 50000 miles, a TV that'll work for decades...etc. You get the idea. Once that principle came to be recognized as a way to bring up the 'bottom line' it was incorporated into products. What bean-counter would stand for a once-in-a-lifetime purchase of his company's product? I ran up against the phenomenon 20 years ago...I developed a particular piece of machinery that kept working for...many many years, as opposed to the commonly used one that would crap out in 1 or 2. I sold a bunch of them in the beginning but never got any repeat orders. (I do get, rarely, an order for a replacement needed because somebody tried to 'adjust' it with a hammer or similar)

22. This is so true.
When I was in college I took a marketing course. My professor kept telling us this very thing and giving us examples. For example, some of you may know of people who had refrigerators or washing machines that lasted them decades. In my house my dad threw out a toaster that he had gotten in the early 50's! Things used to be made to last but that was at a time when not everyone got these things. It didn't take long for companies to realize that if you make something to last for many years, you don't get a lot of business. Also, according to this professor, applicances are designed so that certain parts will die after a certain time. They don't have to make them that way but they do. So you have to ge repairs, parts, etc.

13. Or is it the desire to completely privatize the research?
You know, government funding isn't large on the list of Repug likes. Because they can't buy shares in that.

15. I have doubts about this "privitization" every one is talking about
I mean if they just want to privitize reasearch why are they trying to make it illegal if a woman donates her eggs. And why are they trying to make it illegal if I went outside the united stated to recieve the research? I am not saying that the rethugs don't want to privitize scr, but from my personal expierence I can honestly tell you many more want to ban it.

16. Oh, I didn't know others were talking about it!
It just suddenly occurred to me so I thought I'd toss it out there.

I tend to agree with you, DanCa, I think this is one for their base and it's purely ideo(t)logical.

14. i doubt it
who but the medical and pharmaceutical industry would be selling us the products of stem cell research?

you don't understand what you're dealing with, these people are so filled w. religious hysteria that they would rather lose all this future income and themselves one day die of these diseases than to interfere w. the Holy Stem Cell

seriously life has become a monty python skit because they're really that damn stupid

18. I think it is a political stance for the Repubs to distance themselves
from Bush (while trying to court the RW Wackos, in the stead of partial birth abortion).

It's like the military recruiting numbers (I know they kept lowering the nos., but, it would be interesting to know how many non US citizens have signed up, I think that is a primary reason for the laxity of the illegal immigration issue).

You know, us uneducated masses (speak for yourself), couldn't handle the truth about all the illegal doings of our own gov't, because "We are the good guys!".

20. I think the the united Repub. coalition RW wackos, libertarians,
, and the fiscal conservatives are just splintering like the driest wood you've ever seen. It really is difficult to keep up with the Republican melt down, however, the RW are the last to leave the fold of the wolf. They put all their faith (weak in spirit) into GWB and they would have to admit they were lead astray, quite difficult for the self proclaimed people of God (I am a Christian, I just don't know the JC they profess to follow) to do.

So, Bush, is trying to distinguish himself as a man of God, and let the non RW Repub's blame him for the same. They have not had to face this situation (every thing they touch turns to chit), that they are trying to define Repub niche for all the different flavors, good luck Repubs. The Big Tent is difficult to manage and there are others who have a lot more experience doing it!

21. I think that may be close to the real reason.
Because you know they didn't ban stem cell research. They are just not going to publicly fund it. That leaves private companies doing the research. Private company=big profits. Yes, I think you got it right.

23. The rub is, the Repubs are pro business (corp criminals) and the
private funding as well as researchers are up and moving to more ameniable countries. This is a big problem for the Repub's, tech is what kept this country on top and now we are spiraling down in so many directions, it's hard to see the light at the top of the tunnel when you keep going down, down.

Their policies are failed, and they are trying to hold on to find a way to escape the descent, as usual in 1982 -1983, job recession, home interest were 14.5%, in 1989 job recession, 10.5% interest rates, I know I was there in the job/housing market both times. The thing that scares me the most about our current situation is the outrageous late fee charges and the incredible lowering of mortgage rates and qualifications (led to the Repub's home ownership claims, heard that lately? No, foreclosures are at the highest (Depression was prob., lower) rates and will escalate as rates rise and gas prices take their toll on family budgets. This is the scariest time that I have been alive for.
